  • EXCLUSIVE: THIS HONEY BADGER IS DEFINITELY NOT SWEET – AMAZINGLY ANGRY ANIMAL CHALLENGES A HUGE ANTELOPE AND DOESN’T BACK DOWN DESPITE BEING SENT FLYING There’s nothing sweet about this honey badger, the amazingly angry animal which challenges anything that comes close – even horned antelopes 20 TIMES bigger than it is. Wildlife photographer Dirk Theron, 45, captured some stunning photos of the spaniel-sized badger tussling with a huge oryx antelope. As these pictures show, incredibly the badger challenged the much-larger animal to a fight at a waterhole, even though an oryx comes equipped with impaling metre-long horns. Despite being hurled through the air like a rag doll the honey badger kept coming back for more, biting at the antelopes ankles, before eventually the bemused herbivore left the scene. Lions have been known to walk around honey badgers rather than getting close, such is their reputation for ferocity, which is matched only by their northern cousin, the wolverine. And on the next day the same honey badger was photographed by Dirk, this time chasing away a jackal. Dirk said this particular badger wasn’t sick or injured, it just didn’t like other animals getting too close to it at a waterhole. The images were taken in Etosha National Park, Namibia, and have recently been featured in an African wildlife blog. Dirk said: “It was our first day in Etosha and this waterhole is one of my favourites because of the angle of the afternoon sun. “We were sitting there for a while with not much going on and we were actually thinking of going back to camp, which somebody excitedly said the words ‘honey badger’. “You don’t often get to show people a honey badger in the wild, few people believe you when you try and explain how ferocious and dangerous these guys are. “Well, this one as about to do a show and tell for us. It all happened so quick and was over in a few short minutes. You can spend years in the wild and never see anything like th

  • July 31, 2017 - inconnu - Robots are to make room service deliveries at a hotel.A Silicon Valley based company, named Savioke, is developing autonomous indoor delivery robots that are expected to change the hospitality industry. The robot, named Relay, will be able to deliver food and snacks to guests.Japan’s Prince Hotel chain has become the first to sign up to give Relay a try. The chain will start the trails at its Shinagawa Prince property in Minato-ku, Tokyo from October 2017.Relay is fully autonomous and capable of steering itself to the set location while avoiding obstacles. The delivery robot can also board elevators without human assistance. The robot has a hinged lid and a touch-pad screen with two electronic , expressive “eyes”.When a guest requests something from reception, a member of staff opens Relay’s lid and places the order inside. They then use the touch pad to enter the room number. The robot is then able to be guided to the correct location. On arrival at the room, the guest gets a phone call to say Relay is outside. The guest removes the order and the robot then returns to a docking station for its battery to be recharged.Price Hotel plans to accumulate data through the trails and start using Relay by 2019. Savioke CEO Steve Cousins said:” We make robots for the service industry, robots that can move around by themselves and help people out.”A rabid drop in sensor prices due to the plethora of smart phones means that the robots can be made relatively cheaply despite advance technology.Cousins added that deciding where to put a robot was easy.He added:” First use cases are really simply.“You are staying at a hotel, you need a toothbrush or shaving kit or your are hungry.“You call down to the front desk and say can I have a toothbrush, for example, and the person at the front desk gets a toothbrush and puts it in , types the room number and robot goes off on its own.“When it gets to your r

  • This star-studded image shows us a portion of Messier 11, an open star cluster in the southern constellation of Scutum (The Shield). Messier 11 is also known as the Wild Duck Cluster, as its brightest stars form a “V” shape that somewhat resembles a flock of ducks in flight. Messier 11 is one of the richest and most compact open clusters currently known. By investigating the brightest, hottest main sequence stars in the cluster astronomers estimate that it formed roughly 220 million years ago. Open clusters tend to contain fewer and younger stars than their more compact globular cousins, and Messier 11 is no exception: at its centre lie many blue stars, the hottest and youngest of the cluster’s few thousand stellar residents. The lifespans of open clusters are also relatively short compared to those of globular ones; stars in open clusters are spread further apart and are thus not as strongly bound to each other by gravity, causing them to be more easily and quickly drawn away by stronger gravitational forces. As a result Messier 11 is likely to disperse in a few million years as its members are ejected one by one, pulled away by other celestial objects in the vicinity.
