  • July 29, 2017 - Istanbul, Turkey - July 29, 2017 - Istanbul, Turkey - Hundreds of women marched in Istanbul on July 29 to protest against violence and animosity they face from men demanding they dress more conservatively. The march, dubbed “Don’t Mess With My Outfit,” started in the Kadıköy district on the Asian side of the city. Women chanted slogans and carried denim shorts on hangers as examples of the type of clothing some men say they find unacceptable.  “We will not obey, be silenced, be afraid. We will win through resistance,” the crowds chanted, holding up posters and LGBT rainbow flags. Protesters say there has been an increase in the number of verbal and physical attacks against women for their choice of clothing in Turkey in recent years. Since the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) took office nearly 15 years ago, restrictions on wearing the headscarf have been eased and more women in the country have chosen to wear it.  The march also saw several women protesting against the criticism they have faced for choosing to wear headscarves. • Dame Joans Collins takes to the high seas and dons a captain’s hat in a new comical ad campaign for mobile phone network Three. The 86-year-old actress and Hollywood icon calls on phone customers to ‘ditch and switch’ their phone network to mark an industry-wide change in the UK allowing mobile users to change networks by sending a simple free text. The ad draws on five-times-married Collins’s vast dating experience to encourage viewers to take control and not stay in an ‘unsatisfactory relationship’. The Golden Globe star is seen living the high life on-board a yacht in sunny St Tropez, with playful nods towards the benefits of choosing ‘the one’, before she turns to the camera to say: ‘I’ve never settled for anyone or anything which didn’t float my boat… ‘It’s now easier than ever to switch. So darling if they’re not satisfying you, then just... ghost them. So, take control - ditch and switch to Three.’ Speaking about the campaign, Collins said: ‘Having been married a few times, I can tell you now that staying with someone just to be in a relationship won’t make you happy. ‘It took me a long time to find ‘the one’ because I was never ever going to settle for second best. The relationship you have with your mobile network shouldn’t be any different – when you start to feel unloved, dissatisfied and you can’t see past those niggles, it’s time to move on, darling.’ Launching on 2 July, mobile customers can get the code they need to switch networks by simply sending a free text message – rather than having to call their current provider – and can switch mobile networks in just one working day. To mark this, Three is offering new and upgrading customers six months half price line rental, on its Unlimited tariff (24 month Advanced Plan). This offer is available now until 22 August, on a range of handsets, Home, Tablet and SIM only plans. For example, a 24-month SIM-only Advanced Plan with unlimited data, calls

  • Feb 28, 2008 - Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa - A video recording of black workers made to perform degrading acts by white university students has sparked outrage in South Africa and cast a new spotlight on racism in the 'Rainbow Nation'. It includes images of one of the students urinating into a container of soup, which is then given to four unwitting black cleaners who are later seen vomiting into buckets. A voice is heard explaining that the act is a protest at plans to integrate non-whites into a whites-only residence building. The university is in Bloemfontein, the rural heartland of the Afrikaaner, the original white settlers of South Africa. Even in the post-Apartheid era, racial harmony there remains elusive. One black student at the university said: ''If I am in class they (whites) can't even sit beside us. They just choose to sit beside other whites. That shows they are not appreciating us at all.'' The tape has sparked debate and brought condemnation from whites and non-whites. Police had to use stun grenades to disperse angry protesters on the campus. Two of the students behind the video have since finished their studies, while two others have been banned from the campus. They may face criminal charges. PICTURED: A black student walks past security outside the Reitz hostel on Thursday. (Credit Image: © Shayne Robinson/ZUMA Press)

Exploitation that affects people and the environment. Workers are forced to choose between their health and safety and their jobs every day. Meanwhile, multinationals pollute the territories, burying toxic waste and dumping waste in the seas and rivers. The state allows the continuous construction of houses, cementing entire neighborhoods, but workers and citizens are unable to pay a rent or a mortgage. The very long procession that went through Rome shouted its no to capitalist policies, exploitative policies for all and profit for the few. • May 30, 2017 - Bristol, Bristol, UK - Bristol, UK. Gorilla mum TOUNI with baby yet to be named. Keepers at Bristol Zoo Gardens have revealed that their new baby gorilla is a girl. The little Western lowland gorilla was born in the early hours of Saturday, April 22nd to first-time mum Touni and silverback gorilla dad, Jock. Touni has been at the Zoo since September 2015 after coming from La Vallée des Singes zoo in France, as a breeding partner for Jock. The bright-eyed five week old baby is getting stronger every day and now needs a name. Bristol Zoo’s curator of mammals, Lynsey Bugg, said: “Our little lowland gorilla is doing incredibly well - developing exactly as she should, feeding well and putting on plenty of weight. Now we would like to ask the public to help us choose a name for her.” The Zoo is asking members of the public to vote on their favourite from a choice of three names, all inspired by the name ‘Daisy’. She added: “We would like to name her in memory of the baby daughter of one of our colleagues who was born four years ago on the same day as the baby gorilla. Daisy was stillborn and we thought this would be a lovely tribute to her.” Keepers have chosen a shortlist of names for the baby gorilla – Fleur, Ayana and Undama. Fleur is French for flower, chosen because Touni is French. Ayana means ‘pretty flower’ in Ethiopian, and Undama means ‘beautiful flower’ in Swahili. Voting will open later today (Tuesday 30 May) on the Bristol Zoo Facebook page. After Daisy was born, her parents, who are both members of staff at Bristol Zoo, received support from SANDS (the stillborn and neonatal death charity). For more information about SANDS, visit www.sands.org.uk/ or phone 0808 164 3331. The new baby takes the number of gorillas living at Bristol Zoo to eight. The refurbished and extended Gorilla House opened in 2013 and is able to accommodate up to 10 gorillas in a state-of-the-a

  • He's nailed it. String artist Ben Koracevic creates these incredible works of art - using just cord and nails. The London-based creative winds thousands of metres of string around tens of thousands of nails to create what he calls 'stringometry'. Among his works are a huge portrait of Hollywood star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Keanu Reeves as his John Wick action hero character. He has also created a likeness of Batman baddie The Joker - as played by Joaquin Phoenix in 2019 movie, Joker, as well as animals including a lion and monkeys and guitarist Slash from Guns N' Roses. He only started doing 'string art' nine months ago after watching a video of someone else showing off their skills. "I was completed fascinated with the rare art form," he said. "Developing my skill and ability to replicate what I witnessed became an obsession and I soon found every spare hour being invested into practising." The self-taught artist - who holds a science degree - has since quit his job and cashed in his life savings to follow his dream. He added: "I am quite particular on the pieces I choose. "It is just an instinct where I know the image will look good in string. "It is a very time consuming process which is a quality I enjoy. I love the mental endurance and patience needed to complete a piece to high quality. "Art is a universal language where the work does all the talking!" Ben uses a grid system overlapping a photo or sketch. He then upscales that on to a wooden canvas, before "meticulously referencing" nails to mark a foundation and an outline for the string. He winds the string between the nails to create a likeness, using more string to create darker shadows and more detail. He has used between 6,000 and 30,000 nails on individual pieces - and some contain more than 3,000 metres of string. And he can spend as much as 500 hours alone creating one piece. His works are available to buy at stringometry.com and he is available for private commissions. Please credit Courtesy of

He has used between 6,000 and 30,000 nails on individual pieces - and some contain more than 3,000 metres of string. And he can spend as much as 500 hours alone creating one piece. "Art is a universal language where the work does all the talking!" • Dwayne Johnson releases a photo on Instagram with the following caption: "Power of choice. \nThink about this one for a second.... @nicksanto534 was born with one arm and no legs. In his mind, there's nothing he can't do... and he's right. He's right because he does everything he sets his mind to. Competed as an amateur wrestler, motivational speaker, trains like a beast and today (Sat 9/23) he competes in his first bodybuilding contest. \nWe chatted after my workout about the power of choice. He said, I could've been pissed at the world for being born like this, but instead I choose to live life to the fullest, be happy and crush everything I put my mind to and hopefully, I can inspire people to do the same. \nYes sir. \nLife deals us cards on a daily basis, but we always get to decide how we're gonna play 'em. \nKeep crushing life my man and inspiring all those around you. \nAnd thank you for helping frame my perspective on life just a little bit more. \n#PowerOfChoice".
