• These incredible photos show the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile — home to the second largest swimming pool in the world. The outdoor pool is located halfway up the country’s Pacific Coast in the city of Algarrobo and is filled with a staggering 66 million gallons of crystal clear seawater. Spanning an area of 20 acres — and equivalent in size to 6,000 average size home swimming pools — the San Alfonso pool, designed by water innovation company Crystal Lagoons, was until recently the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest swimming pool. But in December 2015 a sister project by Crystal Lagoons in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, took over the title with the completion of a 30 acre pool, the first phase of plans for a total of 12 lagoons that will span 250 acres and the centerpiece of the USD $5.5 billion, 1,8500-acre Citystars project with residential apartments, hotels and shopping. Still, Sharm el Sheikh’s older sister pool in Chile, at 3,323ft long with a maximum depth of 11.5ft, is still quite the sight to behold and will turn 11-years-old next month, after opening back in December 2006. The San Alfonso pool, situated right next to the Pacific Ocean, uses a computer-controlled filtration system to suck water from the sea at one end and pump it back out at the other. The sun warms the pool to 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit) — nine degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the ocean. And being the size it is, swimming it not the only thing on the agenda — the gigantic size makes it possible to sail boats and carry out all kinds of fun water sports activities. 14 Nov 2017 Pictured: The San Alfonso del Mar resort in Algarrobo, Chile — home to the second largest swimming pool in the world. • September 7, 2017 - Unspecified, Nicaragua - In the Chichigalpa community, an epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown origin (CKDu) is now living in the Nicaraguan Pacific Coast. This disease mainly affects the young men who work in the cane plantations (although children and sick women have also been found). Some scientists attribute the disease to the use of pesticides and fungicides with toxic substances (such as glyphosate) and to extreme working conditions (high temperatures, excessive physical effort, dehydration, hours under the sun, without right to somba spaces). This is a reality throughout the Central American coast, Nicaragua is the most affected country. According to the Pan American Health Organization, between 2005 and 2009, 3,442 men died. The emergency situation has led the communities to settle in organizations such as the Asociación Chichigalpa por la Vida (ASOCHIVIDA), made up of former workers and widows of former workers of Ingenio San Antonio (founded in 1890) owned by Grupo Pella, famous Ron ''Flower of Caña'' and of ethanol. Fog is common in winter in northwestern North America. Moist Pacific air rides up into the Cascade Mountains, the Coast Range, and the Columbia Plateau, then cools at altitude or at night and sinks into the surrounding valleys. As that air gives up its heat to the upper atmosphere, the layer near the surface becomes saturated (reaching the dew point) and essentially forms clouds at ground level. Often a temperature inversion - warm air, higher in the atmosphere, moving over the cooler denser air near the surface - will trap this moisture in the valleys for days.
Such fog would have been easy to see in late November 2015 if you were standing in any of those valleys. And it would not have been hard to distinguish fog from snow if you were standing in it. But the line between snow and fog might have been tougher to spot if you were looking across one of those valley at the fresh snow on the mountains. It can be hard for satellite eyes, too, when viewing things as the human eye sees them.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired these images of Oregon and Washington at 11:20 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (19:20 Universal Time) on November 29, 2015. The top image shows the region in natural color, as the human eye would see it. Note how snow and clouds can be difficult to distinguish from each other. The second, false-color image was composed from blue and shortwave infrared light (MODIS bands 3-6-7, or 479 nm: 1,652 nm: 2,155 nm). Scientists turn to these wavelengths to reveal what the human eye cannot. Turn on the image comparison tool to see the difference.
Fog is liquid water, while snow is ice; fog droplets are much smaller than ice crystals. Those distinctions are visible from space with the MODIS radiometer. In natural color, condensed water - liquid or solid - does not absorb light, so it reflects equally at all wavelengths and appears white, explained Robert Pincus, an atmosp

Two years ago, a new island, or "nijima," rose above the water line in the western Pacific, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Tokyo. It grew out of the sea just 500 meters from Nishinoshima, another volcanic island. Over the past two years, that new island swallowed up its neighbor, and the merged island is now twelve times the size of the old island.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured these images of the old and new Nishinoshima. The top image shows the area on November 6, 2013, two weeks before the eruption started. The second image was acquired on October 11, 2015, the most recent cloud-free view. In both images, pale areas just offshore likely reveal volcanic gases bubbling up from submerged vents or sediments disturbed by the eruption. Turn on the image comparison tool to see the transformation.
Nishinoshima is part of the Ogasawara Islands, in the Volcano Islands arc. It is located at 27°14' North latitude and 140°52' East longitude, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the nearest inhabited island. According to the Japanese coast guard, which surveyed the island on November 17, the island now stretches 1.9 kilometers from east to west and 1.95 kilometers from north to south. It stands about 100 meters above the sea surface.
Lava continues to ooze out slowly, though there are occasional explosions of rock and ash as well. Investigators noted that the total surface area of the island decreased a bit from September to November 2015 - 2.67 square kilometers to 2.64 - likely because of erosion of the coasts by wave action.
You can see the evolution of the volcanic island by visiting out natural hazards event page.
