• Sep 04, 2008 - Santa Monica, California, USA - MICHAEL GARGIULO has pleaded not guilty to the stabbing deaths of two women, including a former girlfriend of actor Ashton Kutcher. Gargiulo, 32, an air conditioning repairman, is being held on .1 million bail and has been in custody since he was arrested in July on charges he stabbed a woman in her home in Santa Monica, California in April. Police say his DNA in that attack matches evidence in at least two more attacks, including the murder of Kutcher's former girlfriend, Ashley Ellerin in 2001. In that case, Kutcher told police he went to pick up Ellerin, a fashion student-model for a post-Grammy Awards party, but she did not answer the door at her Hollywood Hills bungalow and he left. Her body was discovered the next day..(Credit Image: © Santa Monica Police Dept./ZUMApress.com)

 • EXCLUSIVE: POSTCARD FROM MOSUL, A BRITISH DAD HAS BECOME THE FIRST PERSON TO TAKE A HOLIDAY IN THE RUINS OF ISLAMIC STATE – AND HE’S EVEN INTERVIEWED AN ISIS BRIDE A married British dad has become the first person to take a HOLIDAY in the ruins of the ISLAMIC STATE. Without visas and in constant danger of kidnapping, beatings from militia, and even death, Andy Drury took a £4,000 three-day mini break in what was once Hell on Earth. Dad-of-four Andy, 53, has brought back never-before-seen photographs of the devastated former ISIS Caliphate centre Mosul, in Northern Iraq. And amidst shocking apocalyptic scenes the innocent survivors and their families have spoken to him about trying to rebuild their lives in the rubble. The building firm owner, from Guildford, Surrey, even gained access to an ISIS bride whose husband and two sons are all believed to have fought for the death cult. Andy has spent the last 20 years touring areas of the planet most us don’t dare tread and it’s not the first time he’s been to Iraq. In 2016 he narrowly escaped death after visiting the frontline in Bashiir, south of Kirkuk, where he spent time with Kurdish soldiers fighting ISIS. During that encounter Andy, who doesn’t wear a bulletproof vest or helmet, was shot at by Islamic State but luckily escaped unharmed. Andy, who lives with his wife and children, said his biggest reason for returning to the dangerous region last month was to see if the men he spent time with on the front line were still alive. His three-day tour was split into the former front line near Kirkuk on day one, the former ISIS stronghold Mosul on day two, and a last day visiting a refugee camp and interviewing an ISIS wife. Andy said: “I must be the first person to be have been a tourist in the ruins of Islamic State. “My fixer Ammar (not his real name) was right on the front line for the taking back of Mosul, taking reporters in there. “But he said he is more scared with me, with the news reporters he

Daqneesh was injured, in an alleged Russian Air Force strike on the rebel-held al-Qaterji neighborhood of Aleppo. Omran suffered a wound to his head and was taken to a hospital known as M10 and later discharged. Daqneesh was rescued with his parents and three siblings, then aged one, six, and ten. His 10-year-old brother, Ali, died on August 20, 2016, of his injuries. The apartment building collapsed shortly after the family was rescued. Eight people died in the air strike, including five children. Caked in dust, Omran is one of the thousands of Syrian children caught in an endless war. Aleppo, the northern Syrian city, for years has been a battleground between government and opposition forces in this endless Civil War. The eastern section, where civilians live in dire conditions, has been shredded by barrel bombs and airstrikes. Omran Daqneesh, silent and in shock in the back of an ambulance, the left side of his face is smeared with blood. He doesn’t make a sound. (Credit: © Mahmoud Rslan/Aleppo Media Center via ZUMA Wire)

 • The iShack: The simple, solar-powered home that could transform life for slum-dwellers..Meet the iShack, a modern take on an age-old design that is bringing new hope Ð and light Ð to the slums of South Africa..Millions of people are unable to afford to move out of slums and shanty towns in sub-Saharan Africa but the development of the iShack is intended to lift their living standards..People living in rickety and makeshift shacks in slum areas can wait for years before they can get connected to the electricity or water grids, and the United Nations estimates that 62 per cent of the urban population in Sub-Saharan Africa lives in slums..With the iShack, the Ôimproved shackÕ, they get a solid dwelling that is fitted with enough solar panels to keep the lights on at night and provide power for important equipment such as mobile phone chargers..It is an initiative from researchers at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa which they hope can allieviate poverty across the country and beyond its borders..Housing backlogs, government budgetary restrictions and a rise in the number of people moving to urban areas means it will be many years before the shacks of slums can be cleared away and replaced with bricks and mortar....Andreas Keller, one of the project leaders, said: ÔShacks are becoming the new norm..'So what can we do today in order to improve the living conditions of people through energy intervention, lighting, cell phones, communication, upping security?.ÔThat's where the planning comes in and the technology takes it one step further.Õ.Each shack iShack costs about £410 (60) and they have been deliberately designed to be as user-friendly as possible...Windows are placed to maximise air circulation and the sloping roof allows rainwater to be collected..The walls are insulated with recycled materials, a brick floor helps keep temperatures steady and flame-retardant paint is intended to reduce the risk of fires..Lauren Tavener-S

 • It has been more than two weeks since wildfires first broke out in Fort McMurray in the Canadian province of Alberta. The burned area continues to grow even larger, as fires are still spreading under warm, dry conditions.
On May 15, 2016, the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi-NPP satellite captured a natural-color image (top) of active fires detected in Alberta and smoke that crossed into Saskatchewan. Red outlines indicate hot spots where VIIRS detected warm surface temperatures associated with fires.
On the day this image was acquired, 15 wildfires burned around Fort McMurray. Nine of them were new fires, having ignited within the previous 24 hours. Two were burning out of control. The burned area's size - 2,510 square kilometers (970 square miles) - had grown somewhat, increasing by about four percent since a few days before, on May 12.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite acquired an higher resolution image (bottom) of the burn scar on May 12, when the burn area spanned about 2,410 square kilometers (930 square miles). The false-color image combines shortwave infrared, near infrared, and green light (OLI bands 7-5-3). With this combination, burned areas appear brown. Near- and short-wave infrared help penetrate clouds and smoke (white) to reveal the hot spots associated with active fires (red).
The return of residents to Fort McMurray could be hampered by poor air quality, according to news reports. On May 16, the air quality index hit 38 on a scale that typically ranges from one to 10. A lower the number indicates a lower health risk.
