  • Reese Witherspoon’s daughter shows off her trendy university dorm room after teaming up with Amazon Off To College to decorate her room. The 19-year-old student — who since last fall has been studying at the University of California, Berkeley — is gearing up for her sophomore year of college and has collaborated with Amazon Home. Ava, whose father is actor Ryan Phillippe, explained: ‘Because the moving process at my university happens so quickly, I only had a few days to get moved in and settled. I was able to purchase all of my dorm and school essentials from Amazon’s Off to College storefront and get my items delivered fast with my Prime Student membership.’ For her dorm room, Ava picked some of her favorite Amazon items including Rivet Throw Pillow, Amazon Echo Dot, Now House by Jonathan Adler Wink Tray, UGG Bliss Sherpa Throw, and more. Ava went on: ‘In between classes, I often come back to my dorm to get some reading done. I'm absolutely obsessed with my cotton Calvin Klein duvet from Amazon’s Off to College storefront. It's like laying on your favorite t-shirt while studying!’ Speaking about her being a student, Ava said: ‘One of my favorite aspects of college is the freedom to create your own class schedule. While it’s exciting that every week day is different, it sometimes makes it challenging to keep track of my schedule. I've been using my Amazon Echo to set reminders I need for class, set alarms, and keep me organized.’ Students can shop college essentials and dorm room must-haves for life on campus all on Amazon’s Off to College storefront. Amazon has everything needed for college — from headphones to textbooks, dorm decor and more — making it simple by offering students everything they need in one location. • Jul 21, 2017 - Mars Surface - Toward the right side of this enhanced-color scene is a broad notch in the crest of the western rim of Endeavour Crater on Mars. Wheel tracks in that area were left by NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity as it observed 'Perseverance Valley' from above in the spring of 2017. The valley is a major destination for the rover's extended mission. It descends out of sight on the inner slope of the rim, extending down and eastward from that notch. Opportunity's panoramic camera (Pancam) took the component images for this view from a position outside the crater during the span of June 7 to June 19, 2017, sols 4753 to 4765 of the rover's work on Mars. This scene includes features that might have been ancient channels from water, ice or wind moving toward the notch in the rim, which might have been a spillway. Perseverance Valley, just on the other side, was likely carved by action of some fluid, such as water, water-lubricated debris, or wind. The mission is investigating to learn more about that process from evidence in place. (Credit Image: © NASA/JPL-Caltech/Cornell/ZUMA Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)

  • May 25, 2019 - Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan - Tsuruoka Tenjin Festival which takes place every 25 May, honoured the deity of study and learning: Doshin Sugawara. When in former times he had to move to Kyushu, his followers hid their faces and commiserated his departure by drinking sake. Today this was re-enacted with a procession through the city in which ‘ghosts’ wore traditional dress including straw hats. They handed out sake to spectators along the route. The procession featured traditional singing, dancing and flag waving. It reached a climax in the city park where people from the crowds made blessings and ate local food. • Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean typically start to develop off the west coast of Africa, then move westward across the basin and intensify as they approach North America or the islands of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. In the last days of August 2015, that storm development process went into overdrive.<br />
On August 30, an easterly wave from the African interior moved out over the Atlantic, where sea surface temperatures hovered around 30° Celsius (86° Fahrenheit). The unusually warm waters provided fuel for a storm that progressed from tropical depression to tropical storm to hurricane in roughly one day.<br />
According to several reports, Fred appears to be the easternmost hurricane to form in the tropical Atlantic during the satellite era. (Extra-tropical Hurricane Vince formed briefly off Portugal in 2005.) It is also believed to be the first hurricane to hit Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) islands since 1892. The storm did not cause any casualties, nor did it make direct landfall on any of the islands, but it did cause flash flooding and extensive wind damage. As much rain was predicted to fall in one day as the islands typically receive in half a year, though totals are not yet available.<br />
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image of Fred off the west coast Africa at 11:15 a.m. Cabo Verde time (12:15 Universal Time) on August 31, 2015. The storm was at peak intensity when the image was acquired, with sustained wind speeds of 75 knots (85 miles or 140 kilometers per hour) and a central pressure of 986 millibars. It was a category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale.<br />
The MODIS instrument on Terra got a look at Fred's remnants on September 1. Now a tropical storm, it is expected to linger for much of the week and slowly devolve into a tropical depression as it moves north and west.<br />

  • South Africa - Cape Town - 20 October 2020 - According to IOL, TaB broke new ground in 1963 when it was introduced as the Coca-Cola Company’s first-ever “diet” soft drink. It became a cultural icon in the 1980s and maintained a small but loyal following over the last few decades, primarily among fans who grew up with the beloved brand.<br />
It became one of the brand's popular beverages, especially for those who have diabetes as it was regarded as one of the few soda drinks that they could drink.<br />
In a statement by the company, they said that over the next two years, they will retire select products in various markets around the world.<br />
They said that this move is part of a global portfolio refresh, prioritizing category-leading brands with the greatest potential for scale.<br />
This portfolio refresh will allow the company to invest in scaling brands and creating a portfolio of drinks that are positioned to capture growth in a fast-changing marketplace.<br />
Therefore, as part of this process, Coca-Cola plans to retire TaB globally; this includes South Africa.  Picture Courtney Africa/African News Agency(ANA)

  • October 30, 2018 - Space - The geology field training course Pangaea is back for its third leg. Designed to train astronauts and explorers on planetary formation and detecting signs of life, the Pangaea course combines classroom lectures with field trips to sites of geological interest. Led by European scientists, this year's participants include ESA astronaut Thomas Reiter, Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergei Kud-Sverchkov and ESA expert Aidan Cowley. They were introduced to geological processes, how to interpret rock formations and explorationtools before moving out into the field to put their knowledge into practice. Starting in Germany, the team learned about impact craters at the world's best preserved impact site: the Ries crater. The team then moved on to explore landscapes that resemble Mars at the Bletterbach canyon in the Italian Dolomites. From 11 to 16 November the team will get to explore the most Martian of all Earth-based landscapes: Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. (Credit Image: ? NASA/ESA/ZUMA Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)

  • On November 5, 2015, a tailings pond dam failed at an iron mine in southeastern Brazil, sending contaminated water sediment through the nearby village of Bento Rodrigues and into tributaries of the Rio Doce (Sweet River). Tailing ponds store waste left by mining operations - usually slurries of pulverized rock rich in chemicals used to process ore.<br />
The dam failure released about 60 million cubic meters - the equivalent of 25,000 Olympic swimming pools or 187 oil tankers - of contaminated material. Floods killed at least 13 people in Bento Rodrigues and displaced several hundred people in towns and cities downstream.<br />
Contaminated water first moved northeast through the Rio do Carmo until that river meets the Rio Piranga and becomes the Rio Doce. From there, it continued flowing northeast until the city of Governador Valadares, where the Rio Doce makes a turn to the east and heads toward Linhares and the Atlantic Ocean. As heavy mud passed Governador Valadares, a city of 280,000 people, authorities shut off the municipal water supply.<br />
Seventeen days after the dam failed, orange-brown water reached the Atlantic Ocean. Contaminated water continued to flow into the Atlantic on November 30, 2015, when the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this natural-color image. A muddy plume of water extended several kilometers into the Atlantic Ocean.<br />
According to news reports, the contaminated water contains high levels of mercury, arsenic, chromium, and manganese. Some scientists have expressed concern that toxins - along with a reduction in oxygen available in the water caused by the influx of silt and clay - will cause widespread harm to the river's ecosystems.<br />
Samarco, the company that owns the iron mine, has deployed floating barriers along parts of the Rio Doce in an effort to limit ecosystem damage. The company has also dredged the river's mouth to encourage contaminated mud to flow swiftly into the sea rather than settling at its mouth.<br />
