  • June 3, 2016 - File - MUHAMMAD ALI, the three time heavyweight boxing champion, has died at the age of 74. He had been fighting a respiratory illness. 'The Greatest' was the dominant heavyweight boxer of the 1960s and 1970s, Ali won an Olympic gold medal in Rome in 1960, captured the professional world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions, and successfully defended his title 19 times.<br />
June 26, 1976 - Tokyo, Japan - MUHAMMAD ALI (born: Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.), 34, vs. ANTONIO INOKI. The fight between American boxer Ali and Japanese professional wrestler Inoki was held at the Nippon Budokan arena in Tokyo. At the time, Ali had come off a knockout victory over R. Dunn in May and was the reigning WBC/WBA Heavyweight Champion. Inoki, who had been taught the art of catch wrestling by legendary wrestler K. Gotch, was staging exhibition fights against champions of various martial arts, in an attempt to show that pro wrestling was the dominant fighting discipline. The fight itself, which was fought under special rules, is seen as a precursor to modern mixed martial arts The result of the fight has been long debated by the press and fans. The fight was refereed by G. LeBell. (Credit Image: © Keystone Press Agency/Keystone USA via ZUMAPRESS.com)

  • zReportage.com Story of the Week # 635 - The Fall of Mosul - Launched July 5, 2017 - Full multimedia experience: audio, stills, text and or video: Go to zReportage.com to see more - The United Nations estimates that tens of thousands of civilians are still trapped inside the Old City of Mosul. In the weeks leading up to the operation to retake the Old City the UN and human rights groups warned the Iraqi government against the use of 'wide-area' explosive weapons, where houses are tightly packed and the civilian population is dense. A commander from the Iraqi Rapid Response Division stated of the thousands of civilians still trapped inside the old city, many are believed to have been brought from other areas by ISIS to be used as human shields. Iraqi forces reduced their advance through the last streets in Mosul controlled by Islamic State (ISIS) where militants and civilians are jammed in tightly together into a shrinking rectangle no more than 300 by 500 meters beside the Tigris river, their last holdout in Mosul. But the resistance and fighting has been fierce. The number of Islamic State militants fighting in Mosul, by far the biggest city it has ever controlled, has dropped from thousands at the start of the U.S. backed offensive over eight months ago to just a couple of hundred, according to the Iraqi military. With Mosul gone, the group's territory in Iraq will be limited to a few areas west and south of the city where some tens of thousands of civilians live. • February 4, 2018 - London, UK. 4th February 2018. Artist Andrew Cooper points out his sculpture of theheads of Lambeth Councillors responsible for social cleansing to Aysen Dennis from the Aylesbury Estate. Campaigners mark the third anniversary of the announcement by Network Rail of their plans to redevelop the Brixton Arches with a rally and a three minute silence. The area and its small traders who have been displaced (a few are still fighting to remain) has been described as the 'heart of Brixton'. The work was supposed to be completed by 2016 but is only scheduled to start tomorrow, and the Save Brixton Arches campaign are calling for it to be abandoned as the plans for the work fail to include proper fire safety precautions and will severely restrict access by emergency services to local businesses and the railway and station. They also call on Lambeth Council to insist that the conditions of the planning permission that included no adverse effect on the market traders in Brixton Station Road be applied, as the work as planned will produce dust and pollution which will almost certainly force those who prepare food in the area out of business. They also point out that there are no safety measures to protect local businesses, young children in the nearby crèche or the general public from potentially dangerous airborne particles during the removal of asbestos. There was also a call for an investigation into local Labour MP Helen Hayes, elected in 2015, who until she resigned shortly before the election was a senior partner in the firm Allies & Morrison which made the recommendation for the 'improvement' of the arches in 2013, though she has denied any personal involvement. A&M have been involved in many contentious 'regeneration' schemes with developers and councils across London which opponents describe as social cleansing.
