  • August 7, 2017 - New York City, New York, United States of America - (photo: Sachelle Babbar) At City Hall on Monday Mayor de Blasio announced a bill to impose a tax on the wealthiest New Yorkers in order to finance the long-overdue repairs, upgrades, and general maintenance of the NYC subway system. As of late, the subway system has been plagued with delays and accidents, including a June subway derailment that injured dozens. The derailment was due to the storage of loose items by MTA personnel on the tracks. ..Currently, the revitalization plan is being held up by Governor Cuomo’s office, who must approve the tax. The temporary emergency efforts to reduce delays will cost in the hundreds of millions, while the long-term revitalization plan, according to MTA chairman Joe Lhota, will amount to approximately $8 billion.
