• EXCLUSIVE: An epic clash of the titans has been caught on camera which saw one angry rhino mum scare off 15 ELEPHANTS Carpenter Martin Meyer was visiting a national park in South Africa when he spotted a rhino mum with her young calf. Martin has been visiting the park for 20 years on and off and often drives there for a ‘builder’s break’ between jobs. But never in all the years he’s been visiting had he seen anything like this before, when one rhino mum faced-off against a whole herd of elephants. Martin’s amazing images were taken around 4.20pm when he came across the brewing confrontation. Martin, who is not naming the park to protect the rhino mother, said: “Armed with an incredibly beautiful horn and her motherly instinct the mother rhino stood her ground and protected the calf, although she was completely outnumbered by the elephants. “A herd of about 15 elephants consisting of a matriarch and a few youngsters and a few sub adult bulls were approaching and going to cross the path of the mum and the calf. “The rhino mum looked intently in their direction and the ellies seemed oblivious to her and the calf and kept encroaching on her personal space. “When they were around 20 metres away from her position she exploded into a sprint with the baby following and ran directly towards the elephants sending them scattering in all directions, with a massive cloud of dust as a result. “After recovering from the initial shock the elephant herd regrouped and aligned themselves next to one another to slowly move closer to the rhino mum, almost taunting her. Some of the young bulls even moved around and circled them from behind.” More than three minutes of stand-off followed as the stare down continued between the rhino mother and the matriarch of the ellies. Martin said: “My adrenaline was pumping and I was holding my breath for what might happen next, my wife always jokes with me that I stop breathing when I see special stuff in the bush. “As the d

 • EXCLUSIVE: By Sanjay Pandey and Supito Maity in Sao Paulo A 28-year-old Brazilian woman crippled by sheer weight and disproportionate size of tumours in her lower limbs is pleading for help from the netizens. Karina Rodini, who was fired from her job and is forced stay unmarried due to her medical condition, says the disease took a heavy toll on her personal and professional life. Karina has spent most of her adult life hiding it in public. But after last year’s botched up surgery in a state-run hospital, her ‘legs have become double the size and no clothes fit her’, making her a pariah in the locality. Karina suffers from type one neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition marked by changes in skin colour and the growth of non-cancerous cysts in different parts. The disease affects one in 4000 people globally. According to the US National Library of Medicine, patient with type one neufibromatosis are born with one mutated copy of the NF1 gene in each cell. It said, "In about half of cases, the altered gene is inherited from an affected parent. The remaining cases result from new mutations in the NF1 gene and occur in people with no history of the disorder in their family." Karina, from Sao Paulo, was just two when ‘coffee milk’ patches started to appear on her skin. She said due to the lack of formation of lumps, the doctors could barely make out what ailed her. “I was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis when I was only two years old, at first it was only ‘coffee milk’ patches so the doctor couldn’t do anything because there were no lumps or tumours,” she said. The cysts started to show up almost nine years later. One year later, when she was 12, Karina underwent a surgical procedure to remove a cyst, weighing around nine kilograms, from her uterus. According to her, the cavity gave her a semblance of a pregnant woman. Being the oldest child among three, Karina has always received love from her mother, Fatima M. • Indian doctors were at their wit’s end after excising as many as 500 teeth from a seven-year-old’s palate in Chennai, India. The young patient was only three when his lower right jaw started to swell up but was left undiagnosed for four years as his parents lacked the right knowledge. The doctors diagnosed it to be a rare case of "compound composite ondontome", the boy was brought to the hospital with a swelling in his lower right jaw. "Later as swelling increased, the parents brought the boy to our hospital," said P.Senthilnathan, Professor -Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at at the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital on Wednesday. According to the doctors, the patient's family was worried that the swelling was carcinogenic. An X-ray and CT-scan of the boy's lower right jaw showed a lot of rudimentary teeth following which the doctors decided on the surgery. A team of doctors operated on the boy for five-long hours and successfully removed 526 teeth-like structures from his mouth. "We opened up the jaw after administering general anaesthesia and saw a bag/sack inside it. The sack, weighing about 200 grams, was carefully removed and was later found to contain 526 teeth -- small, medium and big sized,” said Dr Senthilnathan. Dr. Pratibha Ramani, Professor and Head of Department of oral and maxillofacial pathology, said, “Social consciousness on emerging environmental hazards is imperative. Every tissue information is patient’s right, surgical decision making is the key and final diagnostic expert is the pathologist.” According to the doctors, this is the first ever case documented in the world in which in an individual has been found to have so many minute teeth. Though some were very tiny particles, the doctors said, they had the properties of teeth. It took five long hours for the doctors to remove all the minute teeth from the sack. • July 30, 2015 - SOL SYSTEM Earth -- 30 Jul 2015 -- NASA DSCOVR probe sends back spectacular image of Europe and Africa from space...Africa and most of southern Europe feature in this image of Earth released today by NASA - from a camera on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite. The image, taken July 6 from a vantage point one million miles from Earth, was one of the first taken by NASA Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC). Central Europe is toward the top of the image with the Sahara Desert to the south, showing the Nile River flowing to the Mediterranean Sea through Egypt. The photographic-quality color image was generated by combining three separate images of the entire Earth taken a few minutes apart. The camera takes a series of 10 images using different narrowband filters -- from ultraviolet to near infrared -- to produce a variety of science products. The red, green and blue channel images are used in these Earth images. The DSCOVR mission is a partnership between NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Air Force, with the primary objective to maintain the nation real-time solar wind monitoring capabilities, which are critical to the accuracy and lead time of space weather alerts and forecasts from NOAA. DSCOVR was launched in February to its planned orbit at the first Lagrange point or L1, about one million miles from Earth toward the sun. It from that unique vantage point that the EPIC instrument is acquiring images of the entire sunlit face of Earth. Data from EPIC will be used to measure ozone and aerosol levels in Earth atmosphere, cloud height, vegetation properties and a variety of other features -- Picture by NASA/NASA (Credit Image: © /NASA via ZUMA Press)

 • August 7, 2017 - inconnu - Here’s a new way to enjoy face-time.It’s a set of clocks featuring moving human faces. The left and right eyes act as hands, looking in the direction the hand would face. The mouth opens and closes as the seconds counter, also making the sound of a clock’s ticks. The clock is literally a screen that displays a human face. Japananese creative studio We+ made the quirky clock by video-recording real human faces in three separate films – each eye and mouthThe team then merged them seamlessly together in a 24 hour looped video. If you want to get from Macau or Zhuhai to Hong Kong, you either have to take a boat or drive at least four hours (200 kilometers) across southeastern China. An ambitious engineering project intends to shorten that drive time to 40 minutes.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau (HKZM) Bridge has been dreamed about for at least 30 years and under construction for seven years so far. There are at least three or more years to go before cars and trucks will be able to pass between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on the eastern shores of the Pearl River estuary to Zhuhai City (Guandong Province) and the Macau Special Administrative District on the western side. The bridge will add a new transportation link in one of the fastest-growing and largest urban areas in the world. More than 50 million people live around the Delta.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite acquired two natural-color images of the bridge-tunnel construction project. The top image was acquired on November 29, 2013, while the lower image was acquired on March 27, 2016. The different shades of blue and green in the water are likely due to different sediment loads in different seasons and tides. Turn on the image comparison tool to see the detailed progress on the bridge.
The HKZM connector will include roughly 42 kilometers (26 miles) of bridges over water, with another 7 kilometers (4 miles) passing through a submarine tunnel. The estimated $132 billion (Hong Kong) project will include three cable-stayed bridges and long stretches of causeways; the longest bridge section will be 29.6 kilometers (18.4 miles) long. Three lanes of traffic will move in each direction, roughly east-west across the water. Once completed, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will be one of the longest water crossings in the world, equivalent to about 15 Golden Gate Bridges.
The tunnel section is being created to allow passage of large ships through the estuary. The co

 • February 4, 2018 - London, UK. 4th February 2018. Artist Andrew Cooper points out his sculpture of theheads of Lambeth Councillors responsible for social cleansing to Aysen Dennis from the Aylesbury Estate. Campaigners mark the third anniversary of the announcement by Network Rail of their plans to redevelop the Brixton Arches with a rally and a three minute silence. The area and its small traders who have been displaced (a few are still fighting to remain) has been described as the 'heart of Brixton'. The work was supposed to be completed by 2016 but is only scheduled to start tomorrow, and the Save Brixton Arches campaign are calling for it to be abandoned as the plans for the work fail to include proper fire safety precautions and will severely restrict access by emergency services to local businesses and the railway and station. They also call on Lambeth Council to insist that the conditions of the planning permission that included no adverse effect on the market traders in Brixton Station Road be applied, as the work as planned will produce dust and pollution which will almost certainly force those who prepare food in the area out of business. They also point out that there are no safety measures to protect local businesses, young children in the nearby crèche or the general public from potentially dangerous airborne particles during the removal of asbestos. There was also a call for an investigation into local Labour MP Helen Hayes, elected in 2015, who until she resigned shortly before the election was a senior partner in the firm Allies & Morrison which made the recommendation for the 'improvement' of the arches in 2013, though she has denied any personal involvement. A&M have been involved in many contentious 'regeneration' schemes with developers and councils across London which opponents describe as social cleansing. • EXCLUSIVE: A THIRD lion pride has been brutally butchered in a MONTH in South Africa by evil poachers who hacked off their heads and paws and stole them to be used to make black magic potions. Distraught owner Menno Parsons, 46, was broken the news that his male lion Tau, 10, and four lionesses had been fed chicken carcasses laced with poison causing them an agonising death. Menno - one of the top air display pilots in South Africa - owns Sunward Ranch which provided lion experiences for underprivileged children near the town of Brits in Limpopo Province. On Tuesday night a gang of poachers threw poisoned chickens over the two electrified fences and waited for the predators to eat them and suffer for up to 30 minutes until all his five lions were dead. Then they cut their way through the fences and using machetes hacked off the heads or jaws of the majestic lions to steal their teeth and hacked off 20 paws and stole them for use in “muti”. Traditional witch doctors or healers use the body parts to make potions known as "muti" for local customers or the body parts are smuggled to the Far East and sold for vast amounts to dealers. Divorced father-of-three Menno said : “When you get the phone call telling you that your lions have not just been killed by poachers but have been butchered I tell you nothing prepares you. “I fly helicopters on anti-poaching patrols and go after poachers who are on the run to help out the police and security agencies but you never actually expect it is going to happen to you. “I have looked after lions for 10 years and they are like a family to me. I am not afraid of these poachers and I have got guys with me and we will be going out there looking for them” he said. Along with head of the pride Tau, 10, his four lionesses were killed sisters Tana and Jade, both 5, and Zuri and Nala, both 3.
