  • June 28, 2017 - SâO Paulo, São paulo, Brazil - A general view of Sao Paulo, on June 28, 2017. Pollution rates in São Paulo are twice as high as the ceiling established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to consider acceptable air quality. The data is part of a survey that analyzes the situation of 3,000 cities around the world. The survey focuses on the evaluation of PM 2.5 particles, the smallest and with the greatest potential to directly affect the lungs. A city can only be considered to have clean air if it presents an average of at most 10 micrograms of PM 2,5 per cubic meter. Any value above poses a health risk. For São Paulo, the rate would be 19 micrograms of PM 2,5 per cubic meter (data for 2014) - almost twice the limit defined by the WHO. (Credit Image: © Cris Faga via ZUMA Wire)

The haunting guitar line from the atmospheric opening bars of Gimme Shelter has helped the classic song to the title of the Rolling Stones' greatest ever track, according to fellow musicians. The song, from the 1969 album Let It Bleed, tops the list in a survey of 100 stars such as Bob Geldof, Marc Almond and Mick Hucknall for Uncut magazine. But the survey shows voters were unimpressed by the wrinkly rockers' output of the past three decades - the most recent tracks in the top 20 were a pair dating back to 1972. The top ten were: 1. Gimme Shelter, 2. Street Fighting Man, 3. Sympathy For The Devil, 4. (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, 5. Tumbling Dice, 6. Paint It Black, 7. 19th Nervous Breakdown, 8. Jumpin' Jack Flash, 9. • Few of the Universe’s residents are as iconic as the spiral galaxy. These limelight-hogging celestial objects combine whirling, pinwheeling arms with scatterings of sparkling stars, glowing bursts of gas, and dark, weaving lanes of cosmic dust, creating truly awesome scenes — especially when viewed through a telescope such as the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. In fact, this image from Hubble frames a perfect spiral specimen: the stunning NGC 2903. NGC 2903 is located about 30 million light-years away in the constellation of Leo (The Lion), and was studied as part of a Hubble survey of the central regions of roughly 145 nearby disc galaxies. This study aimed to help astronomers better understand the relationship between the black holes that lurk at the cores of galaxies like these, and the rugby-ball-shaped bulge of stars, gas, and dust at the galaxy’s centre — such as that seen in this image.
