  • He's nailed it. String artist Ben Koracevic creates these incredible works of art - using just cord and nails. The London-based creative winds thousands of metres of string around tens of thousands of nails to create what he calls 'stringometry'. Among his works are a huge portrait of Hollywood star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Keanu Reeves as his John Wick action hero character. He has also created a likeness of Batman baddie The Joker - as played by Joaquin Phoenix in 2019 movie, Joker, as well as animals including a lion and monkeys and guitarist Slash from Guns N' Roses. He only started doing 'string art' nine months ago after watching a video of someone else showing off their skills. "I was completed fascinated with the rare art form," he said. "Developing my skill and ability to replicate what I witnessed became an obsession and I soon found every spare hour being invested into practising." The self-taught artist - who holds a science degree - has since quit his job and cashed in his life savings to follow his dream. He added: "I am quite particular on the pieces I choose. "It is just an instinct where I know the image will look good in string. "It is a very time consuming process which is a quality I enjoy. I love the mental endurance and patience needed to complete a piece to high quality. "Art is a universal language where the work does all the talking!" Ben uses a grid system overlapping a photo or sketch. He then upscales that on to a wooden canvas, before "meticulously referencing" nails to mark a foundation and an outline for the string. He winds the string between the nails to create a likeness, using more string to create darker shadows and more detail. He has used between 6,000 and 30,000 nails on individual pieces - and some contain more than 3,000 metres of string. And he can spend as much as 500 hours alone creating one piece. His works are available to buy at stringometry.com and he is available for private commissions. Please credit Courtesy of

  • A urology doctor delivered a baby boy during an eight-hour Air France flight from Paris to New York. Dr Sij Hemal, 27, was moments away from enjoying a glass of champagne in first class when he had to jump into action after 41-year-old passenger Toyin Ogundipe went into labor. Dr Hemal, a second-year urology resident at Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, safely delivered the baby — who was named Jake — before tying the umbilical cord with a makeshift surgical clamp… a shoe string. By chance, Dr Hemal had been seated next to a French pediatrician Dr. Susan Shepherd, who was able to help and gave the baby boy a clean bill of health upon delivery. Dr Hemal had been on a day-long journey from New Delhi, India, when the drama unfolded, and was making his way back to the U.S. after attending his best friend’s wedding the day before. “I was pretty tired from jet lag,” Dr Hemal said. “I thought I’d just have a drink and fall asleep. As it turned out, I’m glad I didn’t drink anything.” Ms Ogundipe, a banker who resides between the UK and Nigeria, was traveling with her four-year-old daughter Amy when she suddenly went into labor about midway into the December 17 flight, just as the jet skirted the southern coast of Greenland, 35,000 feet below. An emergency landing would have required a two-hour diversion to a U.S. military base in the Azores Islands, so Dr. Hemal recommended to the pilot they continue to JFK International Airport, which was still four hours away. “Her contractions were about 10 minutes apart, so the pediatrician and I began to monitor her vital signs and keep her comfortable,” Dr Hemal explained. The doctors used instruments and supplies in the flight’s scanty medical kit to routinely check Ms Ogundipe’s vital signs, including blood pressure, oxygen rate and pulse. But within the course of an hour, Toyin’s contractions accelerated; they occurred seven, then five and finally two minutes apart. “T

• A suburban housewife who was jailed following a two-day crime spree in which she stole 28 packages from neighbor’s porches has spoken out. Melissa Bergman, 30, was convicted last month for 12 out of the 28 counts of theft committed on July 27 and 28 last year after pleading not guilty on grounds of insanity. Now the stay-at-home mother-of-two, who formally served in the army until 2009, has revealed her marriage is over and claimed she has been plagued by a string of sexual assaults that happened during her army days. Speaking to DailyMail.com, Bergman said: “I had everything anyone could want. I had money, I had a husband, I had kids, I had a nice house but my husband was very controlling. “He didn't want me doing anything other than staying at home and taking care of my children who are two and four. “I just felt like my life wasn't going anywhere.” Bergman also opened up about her mental health issues and says she was sexually assaulted when she was in the army. She said: “I was 17 years old and the drill sergeant at the time took advantage of his position. I did whatever he asked me to do. I did report it and he went to Court Marshall but everything from that night had disappeared - all the evidence, camera footage, everything had been thrown away.” She went on to claim that the sergeant merely got a “slap on the wrist” before being promoted the next year. Bergman was sentenced to 180 days in jail but only had to serve a 30-day stint in Warren County Jail, which began in June. Following her release she will remain on probation for three years. 26 Jul 2018 Pictured: Ohio housewife Melissa Bergman, 30, who stole 28 packages from neighbors’ porches seen in her mugshot photograph.
