• August 29, 2017 - SâO Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil - SAO PAULO SP, SP 24/08/2017 CLIMATE CHANGES: São Paulo presents hot and polluted afternoon on Tuesday (29).Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the United States estimate that climate change, if not contained, is expected to cause about 60,000 deaths by 2030 and 260,000 by 2100 due to atmospheric pollution. ''As climate change affects pollutant concentrations in the air, this can have a significant impact on global health by increasing the number of people dying from pollution each year,'' said Jason West, who led the study. Researchers at the University of North Carolina, along with researchers at the University of North Carolina, and researchers at the University of North Carolina at the University of California, Berkeley, are also investigating the effects of high temperatures on chemical reactions that create air pollutants such as ozone and affect public health. • June 12, 2017 - inconnu - Elephants in the firing line of ivory poachers are to be fitted with sensors which detect gunshots and alert authorities. The new system is the first use of shockwave detection technology in an intensified push to thwart illegal trafficking and save endangered African elephants.Dubbed WIPER,, the project is a joint effort between two US institutions, Vanderbilt University computer engineering faculty in Tennessee and Colorado State University. It is built into GPS tracking collars which have been used for years to study and protect elephants.Elephant poachers routinely use devices to muzzle the sound from their high-powered weapons, but the blast also produces an acoustic shockwave, which cannot be suppressed. WIPER technology detects that a bullet flew by a protected elephant and sends an alarm with its location.Vanderbilt University Professor of Computer Engineering Akos Ledeczi teamed up with Colorado State University’s George Wittemyer who is also chairman of the scientific board of Save the Elephants. The Kenya-based organization has collared more than 1,000 elephants. The slaughter of elephants and other iconic African animals is fueled by rising demand for ivory in parts of the Far East. As demand increases, prices skyrocket and make illegal trafficking a lucrative, if risky, option.Save the Elephants estimates that 100,000 elephants were killed for their tusks between 2010 and 2012 alone as poaching efforts migrated from the Central African forests to East Africa.Ledeczi’s expertise is in acoustic shooter detection, localization and classification. He and his team have received major grants from US military research facility DARPA and built multiple wireless sensor nodes to detect and locate the source of gunfire.WIPER got a significant boost June 7 with announcement of a $200,000 USD grant from the Vodaphone Americas Foundation. The technology placed second out of eight finalists in Vodafone’s annual Wireless Innov

 • Satellites often observe dust swirling over remote and unpopulated deserts but most of these events go largely unnoticed. Not so with the major dust storm that made international news in September 2015 for enveloping heavily-populated areas in the Middle East and North Africa.
Dust first emerged in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery in Syria on September 6, 2015. By September 7 (top image), a thick plume swept across Syria, the Mafraq region of Jordan, and part of Turkey's Mediterranean coast. By September 8 (bottom image), dust had enveloped all of Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, and the Palestinian Territories. By September 9, it had moved southwest and spread over northeastern Egypt and the Gulf of Suez.
The influx of dust triggered a rash of canceled flights, closed ports, and a suspension of daily activities for many people. In several countries, authorities are advising the elderly and young children to stay indoors. The number of people visiting hospitals with respiratory problems has increased significantly, and several deaths have been attributed to the dust, according to media reports.
While satellites observe the dust from above, air quality sensors on the ground are recording remarkable amounts of particulate matter in surface air. In Jerusalem, pollution levels were 173 times higher than average, according to one news report. A sun photometer at the Sede Boker AERONET station in southern Israel showed a dramatic increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) - a measure of how much sunlight is scattered by particles in the atmosphere.
"Satellite instruments, particularly MODIS, have revolutionized the scientific community's ability to understand the spatial extent, transport pathways, and the source areas of dust storms," explained Thomas Gill, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Texas at El Paso. "Largely because of MODIS, we now have a much better understanding of what specific kinds of landforms and landscapes

In the 1980s, the landscape around Al
Ain - a small city in the United Arab Emirates - was dominated by the colors of the Arabian desert: tan, orange, and brown. Three decades later, green is the color that is difficult to ignore.
The Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5 acquired the top image on April 29, 1984. The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired the lower image on July 24, 2015. Turn on the image comparison tool to slide between the two images.
In 1984, green areas were mostly limited to the large oasis in the historic center of the city. By 2015, several new parks, farms, nature preserves, and palace gardens had emerged, particularly to the south and west of the city. As noted in one recent study, the city now contains 12 million square meters of green space - an average of 32 square meters (344 square feet) per resident, more than any other city in the Arab world. The population has expanded rapidly as well, rising from about 50,000 people in 1975 to more than 630,000 in 2012. The expansion of urban areas - gray in the images - has primarily proceeded westward from the city center due to an abundance of open space and the presence of transportation, water, and power infrastructure.
Green Mubazzarah is one of the most noticeable new green spaces. Located south of the city, at the base of a 1,200-meter mountain called Jebel Hafeet, the park is irrigated by underwater springs. Several other sprawling expanses of green have grown up along the outskirts of the city, including the Al Rawdha and Al Maqam palaces and several farms. One of the largest farms in the city, operated by Al Foah, produces dates on 1,320 hectares.
Although Al Ain's climate is quite arid, the presence of a large oasis along the eastern edge of the city has made greening the city possible. While most cities in the United Arab Emirates have seen water tables fall significantly as consumption increases, groundwater levels have instead risen in some

 • Jun 18, 2017 - Space - Over the weekend of June 17-18, 2017, engineers on the ground remotely operated the International Space Station's robotic Canadarm2 to extract the Roll Out Solar Array (ROSA) experiment from the SpaceX Dragon resupply ship. The experiment will remain attached to the Canadarm2 over seven days to test the effectiveness of ROSA, an advanced, flexible solar array that rolls out like a tape measure. Traditional solar panels used to power satellites can be bulky with heavy panels folded together using mechanical hinges. This new solar array's design rolls up to form a compact cylinder for launch with significantly less mass and volume, potentially offering substantial cost savings as well as an increase in power for satellites.
