• Pretty in Pink

Photographer and guide Paul Goldstein has spent thirty years showing people the Rift Valley in Kenya from ground level, for want of a change he has taken to the skies.

The Wimbledon-based guide for Exodus Travels says: “Lake Magadi in Kenya is one of the less fabled Rift Lakes lacking the box office of Bogoria or Nakuru, but it is just as rewarding. Greater and Lesser flamingos flourish in these alkaline rich soda lakes and only a few miles of game-rich valley floor separates Magadi from the Northern tip of Lake Natron.

“Ever since I saw Denys Finch Hatton fly across these lakes in Out of Africa, I have been mesmerised by the vast shimmering flocks of these birds, aware how parlous their existence is. Too much rain destroys the alkaline content of the soda lakes and can irrevocably alter their diet and breeding patterns.

“A sunrise flight is both dramatic and literally uplifting as the long shadows from the early sun gild the pink and red birds. However, it is late afternoon when the Lake really excels, as the wind meticulously sculpts the soda patterns into intricate and indeed beautiful patterns.

“On this day there were plenty on show and the bird's eye view down a long lens was utterly captivating.”
Paul has run fifteen marathons in a tiger suit for charity. This year (2020) he will run the London marathon AND run the Mount Everest marathon wearing the tiger suit for the ‘Worth More Alive X’ tiger preservation charity.
• Mar 7, 2017 - Antarctica - The shape of the world is hanging by a thread Ð or rather, according to experts, by a 110 mile-long (177km) rift. That's the extent of a rapidly expanding crack in an enormous ice shelf in Antarctica. When the Larsen C shelf finally splits, the largest iceberg ever recorded (bigger than the US state of Rhode Island and a third the size of Wales) will snap off into the ocean. Widening each day by 3 ft (1 m), the groaning cleft is on the verge of dramatically redrawing the southern-most cartography of our planet and is likely to lead, climatologists predict, to an acceleration in the rise of sea levels globally. The shape of the world is hanging by a thread or rather, according to experts, by a 110 mile-long (177km) rift. • zReportage.com Story of the Week # 681 - Hadza On The Brink - Launched October 4, 2018 - Full multimedia experience: audio, stills, text and or video: Go to zReportage.com to see more - The Hadza tribe of Tanzania are one of the last remaining societies in Africa, that survive purely from hunting and gathering. Very little has changed in the way the Hadza live their lives. But it has become increasingly harder for them to pursue the iconic Hadza way of life. Today of roughly 1,300 Hadza living in the dry hills here between salty Lake Eyasi and the Rift Valley highlands, only about 100 to 300 still hunt and gather most of their food. The Hadza's homeland lies on the edge of the Serengeti plains, in the shadow of Ngorongoro Crater. It is also close to Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world, where homo habilis, one of the earliest members of the genus Homo was discovered to have lived 1.9 million years ago. The Hadza have probably lived in the Yaeda Chini area for millennia. Genetically like the Bushmen of southern Africa they are one of the 'oldest' lineages of humankind. They speak a click language that is unrelated to any other language on earth. Their way of life is being encroached on by pastoralists whose cattle drink their water and graze on their grasslands, with farmers clearing woodland to grow crops, and climate change that dries up rivers and stunts grass. Over the past 50 years, the tribe has lost 90% of its land. Either the Hadza will find a way to secure their land-rights to have access to unpolluted water springs and wild animals, or the Hadzabe lifestyle will disappear, with the majority of them ending up as poor and uneducated individuals within a Westernized society that is completely foreign to them. • Handout photo of KÄ«lauea Volcano — Ocean Entry. Aerial view of the active ocean entries at KÄ«lauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone captured during this morning's HVO overflight on May 25, 2018. An ongoing hazard at the ocean entries is laze. As hot lava boils cool seawater, a series of chemical and physical reactions create a mixture of condensed acidic steam, hydrochloric acid gas, and tiny shards of volcanic glass. Blown by wind, this plume creates a noticeable downwind haze, known as "laze" (short for lava haze). Laze is irritating to the lungs, eyes and skin. Photo by USGS via ABACAPRESS.COM

 • July 5, 2018 - Leilani Estates, Hawaii, U.S. - Lava, from small overflows, cools and congeals along the banks of the lava channel to build lava levees. The levees also build up as moving lava pushes cooled crust over the edge. This image of the lava levee and perched lava channel were taken during the morning helicopter overflight of the lower East Rift Zone, in the vicinity of Luana and Kahukai streets, in the Leilani Estates subdivision. The lava levee is the rampart in the middle of the image with small spillovers and lava crusts visible on the levee walls. • Oct 8, 2016 - Antarctica - The shape of the world is hanging by a thread or rather, according to experts, by a 110 mile-long (177km) rift.
