  • March 27, 2019 - Mouhi Aldein Hashhush repairs traditional paraffin cooking stoves and lamps in his workshop in the Old City of Nablus, where he has been working during the last 37 years. The labyrinth of cobbled streets of Nablus’ Old City bustles with numerous shops but also with workshops employing traditional techniques passed through generations. The traditional workshops blend with the rich history of the Old City which dates from the Ottoman era but goes also back to the Romans and manifests itself in its distinct stone facades, beautiful architecture, cobbled streets and dense architectural fabric. • May 16, 2017 - Fort Campbell, Kentucky, U.S. - By taking leave in May instead of April so he could see his little sister graduate from high school, Army Spc. Jesse Thepouhthay missed out on one of his favorite holidays -- New Year. Most Americans generally associate New Year's celebrations with Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. However, Thepouhthay and his family celebrate Laotian New Year in April. The tradition is carried on by his family in his home town in Arkansas. Food is an important part of the celebration, and missing out on spicy papaya salad this year was a bit of a disappointment, Thepouhthay said. Pictured: Army Spc. • A couple in the US have uncovered a beautiful hidden Roman-esque bath under the floor of their home office.<br />
<br />
Mark Ronsman, 39, and his wife Jenny, also 39, bought their home almost three-and-a-half years ago and had been told there was once a hot tub in one of the rooms.<br />
<br />
"The elderly woman who sold us the house told us it was there," Mark Ronsman told Insider.<br />
<br />
"She had gotten older and stopped using it on any kind of regular basis, so she got much more use out of it as an office."<br />
<br />
The couple wasted no time in pulling up the cover and unearthing the hot tub, but it's only been during the recent lockdown that they've had the extra time on their hands to set about getting it up and running.<br />
<br />
"It was impossible to imagine what it would look like," he added.<br />
<br />
"I was very excited to see how bad or good it might be."<br />
<br />
Mark had to be careful as he pulled up the wood covering that sat on the tub.<br />
<br />
"I didn't want to damage the tub while tearing apart this platform in there," he said.<br />
<br />
"I tried to take out as many screws naturally as I could, but some things needed to be cut apart."<br />
<br />
"I started by just using a hole saw so I could make a few holes and peek through."<br />
<br />
"After I understood how it was all put together, I ended up just cutting out a big square in the middle so I could get at it," he said of the process.<br />
<br />
The larger square allowed him to see more of the tub.<br />
<br />
A blue, floral tile pattern started to become visible, which Mark wasn't expecting.<br />
<br />
"We were truly shocked and overjoyed that something so beautiful was in our house," Mark continued.<br />
<br />
"The tile was just beautiful! I was also truly grateful to discover the previous owners took such great care that what they did could be reversed."<br />
<br />
"We never expected it to be so big and deep," he added.<br />

"The elderly woman who sold us the house told us it was there," Mark Ronsman told Insider.<br />
<br />
"She had gotten older and stopped using it on any kind of regular basis, so she got much more use out of it as an office."<br />
<br />
The couple wasted no time in pulling up the cover and unearthing the hot tub, but it's only been during the recent lockdown that they've had the extra time on their hands to set about getting it up and running.<br />
<br />
"It was impossible to imagine what it would look like," he added.<br />
<br />
"I was very excited to see how bad or good it might be."<br />
<br />
Mark had to be careful as he pulled up the wood covering that sat on the tub.<br />
<br />
"I didn't want to damage the tub while tearing apart this platform in there," he said.<br />
<br />
"I tried to take out as many screws naturally as I could, but some things needed to be cut apart."<br />
<br />
"I started by just using a hole saw so I could make a few holes and peek through."<br />
<br />
"After I understood how it was all put together, I ended up just cutting out a big square in the middle so I could get at it," he said of the process.<br />
<br />
The larger square allowed him to see more of the tub.<br />
<br />
A blue, floral tile pattern started to become visible, which Mark wasn't expecting.<br />
<br />
"We were truly shocked and overjoyed that something so beautiful was in our house," Mark continued.<br />
<br />
"The tile was just beautiful! I was also truly grateful to discover the previous owners took such great care that what they did could be reversed."<br />
<br />
"We never expected it to be so big and deep," he added.<br />

  • August 7, 2017 - New York City, New York, United States of America - (photo: Sachelle Babbar) At City Hall on Monday Mayor de Blasio announced a bill to impose a tax on the wealthiest New Yorkers in order to finance the long-overdue repairs, upgrades, and general maintenance of the NYC subway system. As of late, the subway system has been plagued with delays and accidents, including a June subway derailment that injured dozens. The derailment was due to the storage of loose items by MTA personnel on the tracks. ..Currently, the revitalization plan is being held up by Governor Cuomo’s office, who must approve the tax. The temporary emergency efforts to reduce delays will cost in the hundreds of millions, while the long-term revitalization plan, according to MTA chairman Joe Lhota, will amount to approximately $8 billion. • Carelessness kills woman motorcyclist...Dashcam footage shows a driver and his passenger bickering as they drive along a main road in Thailand’s Soghkla Province...However any distraction that the argument may have caused cannot be blamed for the accident that occurred when a female motorcyclist changed lanes in front of the car without checking...The result is obvious form the footage and the 19 year old motorcyclist sustained serious head injuries from which she later died Her passenger was also seriously injured and remains in a serious condition...Obviously the accident would not have occurred if the woman had checked behind her before making the maneuver – especially as she was wearing a Muslim headscarf which would anyway have hindered her view and perhaps her hearing the car behind...Another major contributing factor was probably that she was not wearing a crash helmet. The law about crash helmets is vague in Thailand - most believe that the driver MUST wear one whilst the passenger need not. In any even the law is seldom observed especially in remote areas – all this contributes to Thailand having the second worst road fatalities record in the world...The driver, a 29 year old known simply as Yo, said “I had not yet paid my insurance so the repairs to my car will cost me 45,000 baht (approximately 1,000 pounds) and the motorcyclist won’t be insured – they never are”.©Exclusivepix Media (Credit Image: © Exclusivepix media via ZUMA Press)

  • August 7, 2017 - Kolkata, West Bengal, India - Kolkata Dock System’s 118-year old Swing Bridge,The bridge, built by London-based West Wood Baillie & Co, as early as 1890, connects the turning basin with main Kidderpore Dock No 1. The original design allowed for the railway track to be held on the middle of the bridge, but this alignment was subsequently changed to avoid sharper curve at either end of the track. The original bridge carried a clear roadway of 23.33 ft for both slow and fast moving traffic. But not anymore. On re-commissioning of the bridge after repair work, undertaken by Jessop & Co , no heavy vehicular traffic will be allowed. The repair cost is estimated at Rs. 1.5 crore shared equally between Kolkata Port Trust, South Eastern Railway and West Bengal Government.
