• July 28, 2017 - Uzbekistan - July 28, 2017. - Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of the former president of Uzbekistan, has been charged with six counts of crime. The charges against Karimova are based on the evidence gathered in the case, including the testimonies by members of an organized group, witnesses, victims, and materials of probes into the work of 14 firms and 16 offshore companies controlled by the organized group, seized written and physical evidence, and expert findings. The Tashkent region's court for criminal cases on August 21, 2015 found Karimova guilty of the charges and sentenced her to five years of freedom restriction. Two years ago, a new island, or "nijima," rose above the water line in the western Pacific, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Tokyo. It grew out of the sea just 500 meters from Nishinoshima, another volcanic island. Over the past two years, that new island swallowed up its neighbor, and the merged island is now twelve times the size of the old island.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured these images of the old and new Nishinoshima. The top image shows the area on November 6, 2013, two weeks before the eruption started. The second image was acquired on October 11, 2015, the most recent cloud-free view. In both images, pale areas just offshore likely reveal volcanic gases bubbling up from submerged vents or sediments disturbed by the eruption. Turn on the image comparison tool to see the transformation.
Nishinoshima is part of the Ogasawara Islands, in the Volcano Islands arc. It is located at 27°14' North latitude and 140°52' East longitude, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the nearest inhabited island. According to the Japanese coast guard, which surveyed the island on November 17, the island now stretches 1.9 kilometers from east to west and 1.95 kilometers from north to south. It stands about 100 meters above the sea surface.
Lava continues to ooze out slowly, though there are occasional explosions of rock and ash as well. Investigators noted that the total surface area of the island decreased a bit from September to November 2015 - 2.67 square kilometers to 2.64 - likely because of erosion of the coasts by wave action.
• Icebergs that break off from Antarctica can stay afloat in the Southern Ocean for years. Some become stuck, while others drift in the currents that circle the continent. Where those currents are interrupted by South Georgia Island, some bergs make a northward turn.
These images, acquired November 27, 2015, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite, show an array of bergs floating offshore of South Georgia Island, more than 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) east-northeast of South America's southern tip. Their relatively northern location is not common, but not unheard of. What is interesting, though, is that some of them appear to be making waves - in the atmosphere.
The second image shows a close up of icebergs producing a "cloud wake." Just as a ship leaves behind a V-shaped wake in the water, tall bergs can leave behind similar wake in low-level clouds.
"Cloud wakes are most evident in the lee of the two larger icebergs," said Kelly Brunt, a glaciologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "But you also can see this behind one of the smaller icebergs, just south of the largest iceberg."
According to Brunt, the three bergs are likely tabular - flat-topped ice that broke away from an ice shelf - which means they probably rise to roughly the same height above the water line (on the order of tens of meters). Such icebergs can come into direct contact with low-level fog to produce cloud wakes.
Two of the icebergs also made ripples higher in the atmosphere. "Wave clouds" occur when a higher-level air mass is forced to move up and over a large obstacle. For example, wave clouds are commonly observed when air passes over islands. Unlike the low-level fog that leads to a cloud wake, the air mass that forms wave clouds does not have to be at the same level as the icebergs. It simply must encounter a disturbance large enough to force the air up, instead of around.
"You see these features over the big icebergs," Brunt said, "but n
