• August 8, 2017 - inconnu - Upturned roofs which collect rain could help with water supplies in arid Third World countries and remote communities. The roofs are able to capture and preserve rainfall , however small, instead of letting it run away.It is designed to help rain-drops merge into larger globules making it harder for it to be evaporate under scorching sunshine.A team from Iranian architecture company BMDeign Studios worked on the design for environments with precipitation of less than one third of the rest of the world and evaporation more than three times the average. The concave roof looks like a bowl with very steep slopes. It sits on a base which is dome-shaped.The bowl provides additional shade for the domed area while letting the air move freely to cool both the bowl and roof base off. The studio believes that a roof like this will help make even the smallest quantities of rain to flow off the roof and eventually coalesce into bigger drops just right for harvesting before they evaporate. It calculated that rainfall of just 5mm on a concave roof area of 923 square metres would collect 28.75 cubic metres of waterThe firm created the idea for a school design competition on Iran where 65 percent of the country has an arid or hyper arid climate. It calculated the unique design should be able to collect around 60 percent of rainwater in dry-lands on the Iranian plateau where the school is located.Rainwater reservoirs are placed inside the walls of the buildings. This would also help with cooling the classrooms saving on the carbon footprint.Date palms provide shade for the concave roof.A spokesman said that while the water needed for the school exceeded the amount of rainwater harvested, the key point was maximizing the efficiency of the system. The spokesman added:” Results from further research, hopefully will help lead to new designs for the roofs in arid climates capable of harvesting rain.”.OPS: The stunning concave roof design , in this case c

Reese is seen in a variety of outfits from the collection while on location of the hugely popular twisted drama. Speaking about the shoot, Reese explained: “It was fun to merge my worlds together for a day and I’m excited to give you a sneak peek into my life as an actor, producer and founder and creative director of Draper James.” In several shots, Reese is seen posing by a Bambi Airstream trailer, which appear to be stacked full of shoes. The mother-of-two said that the beachfront is her favorite place to film in Monterey on account of the rich nature on offer and asked about her filming rituals she added: “Before tough scenes, we have really fun dance parties in our trailers! It helps us not to take ourselves too seriously and brings some fun to set.” Asked what is to come in season 2 of Big Little Lies, Reese played it coy but did hint: “More Lies.” The show returns in 2019 on HBO, with co-stars Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Oscar darling Meryl Streep is also joining the cast. 17 May 2018 Pictured: Reese Witherspoon poses in Draper James items for the summer 2018 collection while on location of her HBO show Big Little Lies in Monterey, California. • August 7, 2017 - inconnu - Here’s a new way to enjoy face-time.It’s a set of clocks featuring moving human faces. The left and right eyes act as hands, looking in the direction the hand would face. The mouth opens and closes as the seconds counter, also making the sound of a clock’s ticks. The clock is literally a screen that displays a human face. Japananese creative studio We+ made the quirky clock by video-recording real human faces in three separate films – each eye and mouthThe team then merged them seamlessly together in a 24 hour looped video. Tokyo-based We+ is made up of designers Hokuto Ando and Toshiya Hayashi. They develop their experimental approach to products, installations and graphics, by combining unconventional materials and technology to shift perspectives. Two years ago, a new island, or "nijima," rose above the water line in the western Pacific, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Tokyo. It grew out of the sea just 500 meters from Nishinoshima, another volcanic island. Over the past two years, that new island swallowed up its neighbor, and the merged island is now twelve times the size of the old island.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured these images of the old and new Nishinoshima. The top image shows the area on November 6, 2013, two weeks before the eruption started. The second image was acquired on October 11, 2015, the most recent cloud-free view. In both images, pale areas just offshore likely reveal volcanic gases bubbling up from submerged vents or sediments disturbed by the eruption. Turn on the image comparison tool to see the transformation.
Nishinoshima is part of the Ogasawara Islands, in the Volcano Islands arc. It is located at 27°14' North latitude and 140°52' East longitude, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the nearest inhabited island. According to the Japanese coast guard, which surveyed the island on November 17, the island now stretches 1.9 kilometers from east to west and 1.95 kilometers from north to south. It stands about 100 meters above the sea surface.
Lava continues to ooze out slowly, though there are occasional explosions of rock and ash as well. Investigators noted that the total surface area of the island decreased a bit from September to November 2015 - 2.67 square kilometers to 2.64 - likely because of erosion of the coasts by wave action.
You can see the evolution of the volcanic island by visiting out natural hazards event page.
Even for a nation known for eye-popping rates of urbanization, what has happened along China's Pearl River Delta (Zhu San Jiao)
over the past few decades is extraordinary.
In 1988, an interlacing network of rivers and streams flowed through fertile alluvial soils full of rice paddies, wheat fields, mulberry orchards, and fish ponds. At that time, the region was mostly rural, with a population of roughly 10 million people scattered between several medium-sized cities, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Foshan, and Dongguan. Nearly three decades later, these cities have grown so rapidly that they have merged into an interconnected megalopolis with a population (42 million) greater than that of Australia, Argentina, or Canada.
The satellite images above illustrate the dramatic growth. The bottom image was acquired by the Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5 on November 24, 1988; the top image was acquired by the Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8 on November 16, 2014. Rural areas - mainly farmland and forest - appear green. Urban areas are gray and white. Turn on the comparison tool to slide between the two images, and download the large images to observe the changes on a much finer scale.
If taken as one entity, the Pearl River Delta region has overtaken Tokyo as the world's largest urban area - by size and population - according to an analysis of satellite and demographic data published by the World Bank. Between 2000 and 2010, the Pearl River Delta's urban spaces - defined as areas where the built environment covered more than 50 percent of the landscape in a given pixel - had expanded from 4,500 square kilometers to 7,000 square kilometers. (In 2010, Tokyo had a population of about 32 million people and covered about 5,600 square kilometers.) In the study, researchers used satellite data collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and land cover data from the Landsat program. They also used demographic data pr
