• Lisa Marie Nowak made headlines in 2007 when the former astronaut was arrested for stalking and assaulting her ex’s girlfriend. When she was found she had a strange array of items in her possession, including a BB gun, a map leading to the home of her ex lover's girlfriend's home and most notably, she was wearing adult diapers during her 9 hour drive to the house, from Orlando to Houston. In the movie, “Lucy in the Sky,” Natalie Portman portrays Nowak. 04 Jul 2006 Pictured: FILE: In this photo released by NASA in Houston, Texas on June 1, 2005, the STS-121 patch depicts the Space Shuttle docked with the International Space Station (ISS) in the foreground, overlaying the astronaut symbol with three gold columns and a gold star. The ISS is shown in the configuration that it will be in during the STS-121 mission. The background shows the nighttime Earth with a dawn breaking over the horizon. STS-121, ISS mission ULF1.1, is the final Shuttle Return to Flight test mission. This utilization and logistics flight will bring a multipurpose logistics module (MPLM) to the ISS with several thousand pounds of new supplies and experiments. In addition, some new orbital replacement units (ORUs) will be delivered and stowed externally on ISS on a special pallet. These ORUs are spares for critical machinery located on the outside of the ISS. During this mission the crew will also carry out testing of Shuttle inspection and repair hardware, as well as evaluate operational. • An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) put his or her earth-observation training to work in recognizing an unusual river that vanishes in a sand field well before it reaches the sea. The Hamra River (As Saquia al Hamra in Arabic) ends about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean in a dark blue lake. The river has cut into the landscape, making low cliffs on both sides. The river has its source in the mountains 300 kilometers (185 miles) inland, and it provides a persistent water supply for El Aaiún, the biggest city in Western Sahara. One of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, Western Sahara has a population of nearly half a million people; nearly 40 percent of them live in El Aaiún.
The photograph was taken with the most powerful lens aboard the space station, and city blocks are easily detected in the gray cityscape. Even the white landing-marker lines on the airfield runways are visible, showing that the astronaut perfectly synchronized the camera's view-finder with the moving target. This allowed for one the best ground resolutions that can be achieved from the ISS: close to 3 meters per pixel.
Small horn-shaped dunes are visible at the top left of the top image. The horns of these crescent dunes point south in the direction of dune movement. Sand from the dunes falls down the cliffs, making a spiky shoreline at the west end of the lake, and the dune field effectively prevents the river from reaching the sea. The dunes also restrict the westward expansion of the town. But scattered developments occupy an ancient delta of the river (top right) on more stable ground, where darker patches still indicate prior courses of the river.
• In 2013, this part of Bahia State in Brazil included just a single center-pivot irrigation circle. In this photograph taken in 2015 by an astronaut on the space station, new circles - each about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) in diameter - are tightly packed and overlaid on the original rectangular farm grid. Like a Pac-Man, one circle appears to be swallowing a farm house. The ragged lines of a forested stream (left) contrast with the sweeping, ghostly shapes of plowed stream beds (image center).
As Brazil's economy rapidly expands, center-pivot technology is being introduced to counter the effects of irregular rains and drought in Bahia's drier interior. Agribusiness crops grown in this part of the state include soy beans, corn, cotton and sisal. The nearby town of Magalhães has experienced the fastest growth in all of Brazil, as its population more than doubled between 2004 and 2007.
• An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photograph of the strange rounded shapes along the coastline of Zambia's Chilubi Island. The light-toned sand island stands out from the dark waters of Lake Bangweulu.
In the photo we see a few patches of open water between the fingers of the island. The waters are crowded by areas of aquatic vegetation and wetland (reeds, papyrus, and floating grass) in green. Lake Bangweulu, which is only 4 meters (13 feet) deep on average, is rich enough to supply fish for the copper-mining towns to the west.
Chilubi Island has 100 kilometers (60 miles) of coastline, providing prime access to the richest fishing waters in northern Zambia. Those coastlines are smoothed by easterly winds that erode ancient sand dunes. The narrow strips of lighter toned land along the shorelines are areas that have been mostly denuded of vegetation by residents of the densely populated fishing villages.
The explorer and missionary David Livingstone was the first European to visit the lake (1868).
• An astronaut aboard the International Space Station focused near the Sun's reflection point to shoot this photograph of grid-patterned fish farms on the coast of China's northeast province of Liaoning. The aquaculture basins have been built out from the wooded coast to a distance of nearly 6 kilometers (4 miles). Fish farms have been constructed at many points along the provincial coastline, but this group of basins facing the Yellow Sea is the largest. (Liaoning Province is the sixth in China in terms of aquaculture production.)
The basins are built on shallow seabeds, mudflats, and bays.
Islands, such as the one at image center, often help anchor the construction of basins. Outer barriers protect the basins from winter storms. Water flow lines and a ship wake are visible near the river estuary.
Most aquaculture products are marketed live in China, with less than 5 percent processed for local or overseas markets.
Shellfish, a traditional marine food source, still dominates the marine species production (77 percent), with sea fish a distant second (5 percent).
About 4.3 million people are involved in freshwater and marine fish production in China (as of 2007).
• Crews aboard the International Space Station are trained to use low sun angles to add a three-dimensional effect to flat landscapes, a skill that is well illustrated by this image of central Saudi Arabia.
The main river (upper left), located 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of the capital city Riyadh, has eroded its bed down into the rock layers, making a small canyon 250 meters (820 feet) deep. This in turn has led all of its tributaries to dig their own canyons, resulting in an elaborate, leaf-like pattern that casts shadows in the late afternoon sun. For scale, the area shown is just 12.5 kilometers (7.7 miles) across.
This photograph shows the faint tracing of a road following the main river. River beds are often the smoothest places in deserts for wheeled vehicles; they connect villages that occupy river beds and terraces up and downstream because there is access to water. Dark dots within the main river bed are trees that only grow where their roots can reach subsurface water.
The center of the small plateau is a slightly different color from the area surrounding it. This is a lighter-toned layer of sedimentary rock, one of many in the area. Other thin layers make benches within the canyons in the same style as seen in the Grand Canyon of the USA, but on a much smaller scale.
• April 16, 2002 - Earth Atmosphere - Astronaut Jerry L. Ross, STS-110 mission specialist, anchored to the mobile foot restraint at the end of the International Space Station's (ISS) Canadarm2, works in tandem with astronaut Lee M. E. Morin (out of frame), mission specialist, during the fourth and final scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) for the STS-110 mission. The major task was the installation of a beam, which is called the Airlock Spur, between the Quest Airlock and the S0 (S-zero) Truss. The spur will be used by spacewalkers in the future as a path from the airlock to the truss. Ross and Morin also installed handrails onto the S0, partially assembled a platform, installed two floodlights and performed several other tasks preparing for upcoming assembly missions. • This is the worlds first-ever luxury space hotel ‘Aurora Station’ that plans on welcoming guests in 2022. A new space startup called Orion Span unveiled the out-of-this-world destination with hopes to host guests beginning in 2022. Aurora Station is being built in Houston, Texas. The exclusive hotel will host six people at a time – including two crew members. A 12-day stay at Aurora Station will start at $9.5 million — considerably less than the $20-$40 million space tourists paid for trips to the International Space Station from 2001 to 2009. Aboard Aurora Station, travelers will fly freely through the space station in zero gravity. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in research experiments and even livestream via high-speed wireless internet. “We developed Aurora Station to provide a turnkey destination in space. Upon launch, Aurora Station goes into service immediately, bringing travelers into space quicker and at a lower price point than ever seen before, while still providing an unforgettable experience,” said Frank Bunger, chief executive officer and founder of Orion Span. “Orion Span has additionally taken what was historically a 24-month training regimen to prepare travelers to visit a space station and streamlined it to three months, at a fraction of the cost. Our goal is to make space accessible to all, by continuing to drive greater value at lower cost.” Accommodations for four paying guests along with two crewmembers complete the initial plans for Aurora Station. But as demand grows Orion Span intends to add to the original Aurora Station core. While the ISS is 357 feet long, Aurora Station will begin at just 43.5 feet long and 14.1 feet wide — roughly the size of a large private jet's cabin. Visitors to Aurora Station will participate in the 3-month training regimen to prepare themselves for the journey and stay in orbit. From online courses to in-person training in Houston, travelers will be prepared through Orion Span As
