  • December 17, 2018 - Bangkok, Bangkok, Thailand - Shoppers use an airconditioned walkway to go from Siam Discovery Mall to Siam Center Mall, both upscale malls in central Bangkok. According to Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook 2018, which surveyed 40 countries, Thailand has the highest rate of income inequality in the world. In 2016, Thailand was third, behind Russia and India. In 2016, the 1% richest Thais (about 500,000 people) owned 58.0% of the Thailand's wealth. In 2018, they controlled 66.9%. In Russia, those numbers went from 78% in 2016, down to 57.1% in 2018. The Thai government disagreed with the report and said the report didn't take government anti-poverty programs into account and that Thailand was held to an unfair standard because most of the other countries in the report are developed countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. • February 4, 2018 - London, UK. 4th February 2018. Artist Andrew Cooper points out his sculpture of theheads of Lambeth Councillors responsible for social cleansing to Aysen Dennis from the Aylesbury Estate. Campaigners mark the third anniversary of the announcement by Network Rail of their plans to redevelop the Brixton Arches with a rally and a three minute silence. The area and its small traders who have been displaced (a few are still fighting to remain) has been described as the 'heart of Brixton'. The work was supposed to be completed by 2016 but is only scheduled to start tomorrow, and the Save Brixton Arches campaign are calling for it to be abandoned as the plans for the work fail to include proper fire safety precautions and will severely restrict access by emergency services to local businesses and the railway and station. They also call on Lambeth Council to insist that the conditions of the planning permission that included no adverse effect on the market traders in Brixton Station Road be applied, as the work as planned will produce dust and pollution which will almost certainly force those who prepare food in the area out of business. They also point out that there are no safety measures to protect local businesses, young children in the nearby crèche or the general public from potentially dangerous airborne particles during the removal of asbestos. There was also a call for an investigation into local Labour MP Helen Hayes, elected in 2015, who until she resigned shortly before the election was a senior partner in the firm Allies & Morrison which made the recommendation for the 'improvement' of the arches in 2013, though she has denied any personal involvement. A&M have been involved in many contentious 'regeneration' schemes with developers and councils across London which opponents describe as social cleansing. • October 1, 2018 - Banks, shops and businesses remain close during a general strike against the ‘Jewish Nation-State Law’ in Gaza City on October 1, 2018. The Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as Palestinian towns inside Israel have held a day of general strike in protest of the recently passed Jewish nation state law in Israel. The strike was called for by Palestinian national and Islamic factions in coordination with the High Follow-Up Committee for Arab Citizens in Israel, who condemn the legislation on the basis that it enshrines inequality among Israel citizens and turns non-Jews citizens in Israel into second-class citizens. The strike was also to protest the Israeli high court order for the residents of the Bedouin village of Khan Al-Ahmar to evacuate their village voluntarily or to face demolition and forced displacement. Monday 1th October 2018 was set by the Israeli authorities as the final deadline for the Khan Al-Ahmar villagers to leave before being forcefully removed from their village (Credit Image: © Ahmad Hasaballah/IMAGESLIVE via ZUMA Wire)

  • October 9, 2016 - Boa Viagem, Brazil - Despite much social inequality, the neighborhood of Boa Viagem is one of the most affluent neighborhoods and known from northeastern Brazil. José Belmiro dos Santos is 84 years old, married to Rosalia Maria da Conceição and has nine children. He is retired since 1997 and works in a parking taking care of vehicles. The parking lot is situated in an abandoned building in Boa Viagem, in Recife, Pernambuco state, Brazil.Mr. José has to live in the building and can only visit family once a month. He thinks it's dangerous, because the parking lot is located inside a slum, but need to earn cash and stay home another person can take his job.Mr. José is part of a national statistic that indicates an increase in the number of pensioners who return to work in Brazil, 5.9% in the first quarter of 2012 to 6.5% in the second quarter 2016 (data from the Brazilian Institute of geography and Statistics), due to the current economic crisis. The government of the current President Michel Temer has as one of the goals the approval of Welfare Reform, thus ensuring clearer rules for retirement and the increase in the contribution to the public coffers. The approval of new rules for retirement might take the Brazil of the crisis and increase a government approval rating scored by polemics and an impeachment questioned by the opposition. • June 16, 2018 - Rome, Italy, Italy - Demonstration in Rome called by the union Usb (Union base union) against the diktat of the European Union, against the new government and the hard line on immigration, against social inequalities. The demonstration reminded the activist of Mali militant of the Usb union, Soumayla Sacko, killed in the Calabrian countryside while, with two compatriots, he was taking sheets from an old abandoned furnace to make us the roof of the shack to sleep after work. Many laborers in the square had potatoes and tomatoes in their hands, products harvested in the countryside. (Credit Image: © Patrizia Cortellessa/Pacific Press via ZUMA Wire)
