  • August 18, 2017 - Shivnibas, Nadia, India - Indian women participates in Boat Race on Churni River on the occasion of Independence Day celebration in Shivnibas, Nadia district , 95 km from Kolkata , India on Friday , 18th August, 2017. While the entire nation celebrated Independence Day on August 15, one part of India observed the national event on 18th August . It might sound strange to many but the reason behind this delayed celebration is because of a cartographic error made by Sir Cyril Radcliffe 70 years ago. On August 12, 1947 news on radio stated that India had been granted freedom but unfortunately a part of Nadia district had been awarded to East Pakistan. Pre-independent Nadia had five subdivisions: Krishnagar Sadar, Meherpur, Kusthia, Chuadanga and Ranaghat and all these areas except Nabadwip were given to East Pakistan. Celebration followed the next day and the Pakistani flag, which was raised by Muslim league in the Krishnanagar (Dist. headquarters of Nadia) was brought down and replaced with the Indian tricolour on 18 August. There are few places on earth that match the peacefulness of its Mahabodhi Temple, which was built at the Bodhi tree where the Buddha sat under around 530 BCE. Visitors to hectic India will be particularly relaxed sitting among countless Buddhist monks who make journeys to India to pay respect to the Buddha and to collect falling leaves from the famous Bodhi tree. If you’re lucky, you may be meditating next to the singing Thai monk who visits the temple regularly. He happens to have an affinity for tying Western music to Buddhist philosophy. You will likely hear: “keep smilin’, keep shinin’.” Knowin’ you can always count of me, for sure” or “let it be, let it be. Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.” The great philosopher will also help you deal with India’s stifling heat with his little bottle of Thai Ang Ki, which cools your skin when added to a sprinkling of water. • November 2, 2018 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - DHAKA, BANGLADESH - NOVEMBER 02 : Christian devotees observe All Souls' Day, known as the Feast of All Souls, Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed in Dhaka , Bangladesh on November 02, 2018...On this day, Christians come to the graveyard and pray for the departed souls of their loved ones..All Soul's Day is a Roman Catholic day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed away. This comes from the ancient Pagan Festival of the Dead, which celebrated the Pagan belief that the souls of the dead would return for a meal with the family. Candles in the window would guide the souls back home, and another place was set at the table. Children would come through the village, asking for food to be offered symbolically to the dead, and then donated to feed the hungry..The importance of All Souls Day was made clear by Pope Benedict XV (1914-22), when he granted all priests the privilege of celebrating three Masses on All Souls Day: one, for the faithful departed; one for the priest's intentions; and one for the intentions of the Holy Father. Only on a handful of other very important feast days are priests allowed to celebrate more than two Masses. (Credit Image: © Zakir Hossain Chowdhury/ZUMA Wire)

  • June 4, 2017 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - Bangladeshi weaver weaves Benarasi sari (Woman Wear) on a traditional wooden hand weaving loom at Mirpur in Dhaka, Bangladesh. On June 05, 2017.Benarasi Sari has an ancient history beginning from the Mughal Empire in the 16th century. It is known that it originated from Benaras, a northern city of India. Benarasi Sari found its way to Bangladesh, when the Muslims migrated from Benaras into Bangladesh. It was these migrants that started the practice of making Benarasi Sari at Mohammadpur and Mirpur in Dhaka. The texture of a Benarasi fabric can be either light or heavy. The silk is first put into rollers that twist a single silk thread with another to thicken its texture. This is then heated and put into a Tana where it is made into a bundle. The threads are then dyed elsewhere. The threads are stretched out in a single room made of rusted tin and worn out bamboo with barely any ventilation or lighting. In another similar room, a weaver weaves the designs on a sari. A single Benarasi Sari that is 21 feet in length and 3.5 feet in breadth can take a week or longer to be completed. • March 29, 2019 - Traditional washer men and women wash a different varieties of clothes manually on the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, in Indian Administered Kashmir on 29 March 2019. Washer men and women scrub the clothes by hand while men wring them in the large outdoor laundry, employing a traditional method passed on through generations in India but currently only practised by few in the remaining open laundries or “dhobi ghat” in the country. The work is physically demanding, with washmen often standing in knee deep soapy water in a tub hitting and rinsing clothes and linen, and then pounding them on a stone. Work in the laundry usually begins at dawn and continues until late in the evening, and it isn’t a lucrative activity, especially since the advent of technology in the washing profession (Credit Image: © Muzamil Mattoo/IMAGESLIVE via ZUMA Wire)
