  • April 30, 2019 - Sao Paulo, Brazil - A statement by President Jair Bolsonaro asking for lower interest rates at Banco do Brasil (BB) put a brake on the bullish move of the Bovespa Index yesterday. The stock market closed the trading session with a fall of 0.05% at 96,187.75 points. During his participation in the opening of Agrishow, Bolsonaro defended the reduction of Banco do Brasil's interest in the promotion of rural credit. The president addressed the president of BB, Rubem Novaes, and, in a tone of good humor, said: ''I appeal, Rubem, to your heart and patriotism, that these interests fall a little more.'' Bolsonaro said during the event that the government will release R $ 1 billion into the rural insurance program, but did not give details about the credit. The statement on interest had immediate effect on Banco do Brasil's shares, which abandoned the bullish signal with which they had been operating and contaminated the other shares of the financial sector. • A pair of beavers who were born in captivity have finally fallen in love, several months after being released into the wild. This footage, reminiscent of a scene from Love Island but with beavers instead, shows Kent-born Harris and Scottish-born Alba giving each other a late-night grooming session, in a clear sign of their blossoming romance. But hard-to-get Alba — who was born at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) Highland Wildlife Park — made Harris put in some serious graft before agreeing to couple up at their lakeside home in Knapdale Forest in Argyll, Scotland. Ben Harrower, RZSS conservation programme manager, explained that it took the beavers more than three months to get the spark going. He said: “It’s fantastic to see Alba and Harris getting along so well and I have high hopes that they will breed and produce beaver kits in the future. “Alba established herself on the lochan [lake] after being released in October and, after a health and genetic screening, Harris was deemed to be a potential suitor. We released him in the same location in March and waited to see if they would pair up. “Post release monitoring footage showed both beavers doing well, but for months they were not seen together. It was only in late June, when Scottish Beavers contractors from the Heart of Argyll Wildlife Association were going through imagery from the lochan, that a video clip was found with them side by side and grooming each other, a great sign that Alba has accepted Harris as a mate.” Alba and Harris, who was born at the Wildwood Trust in Kent, have produced the first ever footage of a successful pairing of two captive bred beavers in the wild following the Scottish Beaver Trial in Knapdale. Mr Harrower added: “Beavers were absent from the wild in Scotland for over 400 years and the Scottish Beaver Trial was the first official reintroduction of a mammal to the UK. “Alba and Harris are just two of up to 28 beavers we are releasing in Knapdale o

  • February 4, 2018 - London, UK. 4th February 2018. Artist Andrew Cooper points out his sculpture of theheads of Lambeth Councillors responsible for social cleansing to Aysen Dennis from the Aylesbury Estate. Campaigners mark the third anniversary of the announcement by Network Rail of their plans to redevelop the Brixton Arches with a rally and a three minute silence. The area and its small traders who have been displaced (a few are still fighting to remain) has been described as the 'heart of Brixton'. The work was supposed to be completed by 2016 but is only scheduled to start tomorrow, and the Save Brixton Arches campaign are calling for it to be abandoned as the plans for the work fail to include proper fire safety precautions and will severely restrict access by emergency services to local businesses and the railway and station. They also call on Lambeth Council to insist that the conditions of the planning permission that included no adverse effect on the market traders in Brixton Station Road be applied, as the work as planned will produce dust and pollution which will almost certainly force those who prepare food in the area out of business. They also point out that there are no safety measures to protect local businesses, young children in the nearby crèche or the general public from potentially dangerous airborne particles during the removal of asbestos. There was also a call for an investigation into local Labour MP Helen Hayes, elected in 2015, who until she resigned shortly before the election was a senior partner in the firm Allies & Morrison which made the recommendation for the 'improvement' of the arches in 2013, though she has denied any personal involvement. A&M have been involved in many contentious 'regeneration' schemes with developers and councils across London which opponents describe as social cleansing.
