  • EXCLUSIVE: An epic clash of the titans has been caught on camera which saw one angry rhino mum scare off 15 ELEPHANTS Carpenter Martin Meyer was visiting a national park in South Africa when he spotted a rhino mum with her young calf. Martin has been visiting the park for 20 years on and off and often drives there for a ‘builder’s break’ between jobs. But never in all the years he’s been visiting had he seen anything like this before, when one rhino mum faced-off against a whole herd of elephants. Martin’s amazing images were taken around 4.20pm when he came across the brewing confrontation. Martin, who is not naming the park to protect the rhino mother, said: “Armed with an incredibly beautiful horn and her motherly instinct the mother rhino stood her ground and protected the calf, although she was completely outnumbered by the elephants. “A herd of about 15 elephants consisting of a matriarch and a few youngsters and a few sub adult bulls were approaching and going to cross the path of the mum and the calf. “The rhino mum looked intently in their direction and the ellies seemed oblivious to her and the calf and kept encroaching on her personal space. “When they were around 20 metres away from her position she exploded into a sprint with the baby following and ran directly towards the elephants sending them scattering in all directions, with a massive cloud of dust as a result. “After recovering from the initial shock the elephant herd regrouped and aligned themselves next to one another to slowly move closer to the rhino mum, almost taunting her. Some of the young bulls even moved around and circled them from behind.” More than three minutes of stand-off followed as the stare down continued between the rhino mother and the matriarch of the ellies. Martin said: “My adrenaline was pumping and I was holding my breath for what might happen next, my wife always jokes with me that I stop breathing when I see special stuff in the bush. “As the d

  • May 3, 2019 - Gaza, Palestine, 3 May 2019. Clashes occur between Palestinian protesters and the Israeli forces near Abu Safiya, in the northern Gaza strip, in this week Great March of Return rally, while paramedics rush to rescue and treat the injured protesters. The weekly Gaza border protests were attended by around 5,000 Palestinians, and according to Gaza Health Ministry Palestinian protester Raed Abu Teir, 19, was shot dead by live Israeli fire while 40 demonstrators were wounded as Israeli soldiers fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live gunshots at them. Some Palestinians threw stones towards the fence and the Israeli troops, and according to the Israeli army some incendiary devices were launched on Friday from Gaza into Israel, and two Israeli soldiers were wounded by Palestinian gunfire. In response to the alleged Palestinian shooting, an Israeli aircraft attacked a Hamas post in the southern Gaza strip killing two Palestinians. Border clashes have been taking place at least once a week for over a year, and since the protests began at the end of March 2018, at least 265 Palestinians have been killed and thousands have been injured, while Palestinians paramedics have been putting their lives at risk to save the injured protesters (Credit Image: © Ahmad Hasaballah/IMAGESLIVE via ZUMA Wire)

  • December 17, 2018 - A number of Gaza demonstrators are injured during clashes with Israeli Security Forces on the coast near Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza, on 17th December 2018, during the 20th weekly naval rally. Palestinian protesters threw stones using slingshots while Israeli troops used rubber and live ammunitions and fired teargas canisters to disperse the protesters injuring at least 20 of them with gunshots and tear gas inhalation. Red Crescent paramedic, Ahmad Abdel Bari Al-Ful, was injured in his left arm by a rubber bullet fired by Israeli troops while he was on duties during the protest. A freedom flotilla made up of several boats flying Palestinian flags also attempted to break Israel’s naval siege northwest of the city of Beit Lahia, and it was also met by Israeli fire from Israeli war boats. Palestinians in Gaza have held weekly protests for several months to challenge the Israeli siege on the coastal enclave as well as the Israeli naval blockade which limits the nautical miles for fishing to Palestinians in the waters off the Gaza shores. The blockade on Gaza has caused a serious decline in the standard of living of the impoverished enclave driving the economy on the brink of collapse and bringing Gaza close to a humanitarian catastrophe (Credit Image: © Ahmad Hasaballah/IMAGESLIVE via ZUMA Wire)

  • July 6, 2018 - A number of Palestinians demonstrators are injured during clashes with Israeli soldiers along the Gaza-Israeli border on the east of Gaza City, as the Great March of Return protests continue for the 15th Friday. Dozens of Palestinian protesters gathered on the east of Gaza City burning tires and waving Palestinian flags with the Israeli soldiers firing gunshots and tear gas canisters to disperse the demonstrators, who replied with hurling stones at them. According to the Israeli authorities Palestinians released flammable kites into Israel causing fires to fields near the border. Since March 30th Gazans have held weekly Friday rallies defying the risks and since then at least 136 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 15 thousands injured by the Israeli army. Demonstrators have demanded their right of return to the land their ancestors were displaced or fled from, and they have also called for the lift of the siege on Gaza, enforced by Israel since 2007 (Credit Image: © Ahmad Hasaballah/IMAGESLIVE via ZUMA Wire)

  • June 12, 2017 - inconnu - Elephants in the firing line of ivory poachers are to be fitted with sensors which detect gunshots and alert authorities. The new system is the first use of shockwave detection technology in an intensified push to thwart illegal trafficking and save endangered African elephants.Dubbed WIPER,, the project is a joint effort between two US institutions, Vanderbilt University computer engineering faculty in Tennessee and Colorado State University. It is built into GPS tracking collars which have been used for years to study and protect elephants.Elephant poachers routinely use devices to muzzle the sound from their high-powered weapons, but the blast also produces an acoustic shockwave, which cannot be suppressed. WIPER technology detects that a bullet flew by a protected elephant and sends an alarm with its location.Vanderbilt University Professor of Computer Engineering Akos Ledeczi teamed up with Colorado State University’s George Wittemyer who is also chairman of the scientific board of Save the Elephants. The Kenya-based organization has collared more than 1,000 elephants. The slaughter of elephants and other iconic African animals is fueled by rising demand for ivory in parts of the Far East. As demand increases, prices skyrocket and make illegal trafficking a lucrative, if risky, option.Save the Elephants estimates that 100,000 elephants were killed for their tusks between 2010 and 2012 alone as poaching efforts migrated from the Central African forests to East Africa.Ledeczi’s expertise is in acoustic shooter detection, localization and classification. He and his team have received major grants from US military research facility DARPA and built multiple wireless sensor nodes to detect and locate the source of gunfire.WIPER got a significant boost June 7 with announcement of a $200,000 USD grant from the Vodaphone Americas Foundation. The technology placed second out of eight finalists in Vodafone’s annual Wireless Innov

  • Chilling tour in the haunting remains of the Chernobyl site 30 years on ..When 29 years ago a mile-tall blue flame shot high into the sky, burning a hole in the ozone layer, the eyes of the world focused on the human-made volcano - Soviet Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant - spewing 400 times more radioactive load than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. .It was the Cold War, so American satellites were zooming in on the plant, now with a glowing red spot, much like a fresh gunshot wound on Earth's surface, bleeding plutonium..'We did not know that death could be so beautiful,' said those who saw it from the model Soviet town of Pripyat, built specially for the employees of the plant, clean and church-less. ..Ukraine is holding commemorations to mark the 30th anniversary of the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl..Sirens were sounded at the same moment as the first explosion at the reactor, in the early hours of 26 April 1986..The meltdown at the plant remains the worst nuclear disaster in history..An uncontrolled reaction blew the roof off, spewing out a cloud of radioactive material which drifted across Ukraine's borders, into Russia, Belarus and across a swathe of northern Europe..©Michal Huniewich/Exclusivepix Media (Credit Image: © Exclusivepix media via ZUMA Press)
