  • November 10, 2018 - New York City, New York, US - A stretch of a Brooklyn, New York sidewalk, has been transformed into a checkerboard of black and white squares across a patch of pavement outside a fancy new apartment building and store RISK Boutique and Gallery in the rapidly gentrified neighborhood of Bushwick. • South Africa - Cape Town - 13 May 2019 - Places of worship to open at level 3 lockdown, attendance limited to 50 people. Churches, mosques and synagogues may resume religious services as long as these are limited to 50 people or less, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday night. The president's announcement comes after a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council which considered the inputs made by the religious sector in recent consultations with interfaith leaders. Ramaphosa also announced a national day of prayer on Sunday, May 31.<br />

Adhan is called out by a Muezzin from the mosque five times a day, before dawn, mid afternoon, before dusk, after dusk and when its dark later. The main purpose behind the multiple loud pronouncements of Adhan in every mosque is to make available to everyone an easily intelligible summary of Islamic belief. These days loudspeakers are used on minarets for this purpose. The Mosque in Muir Street, has had a single "noise pollution" complaint lodged against them at the City of Cape Town, which is obliged, in terms of the law, to investigate. ‘’The Adhan is extremely spiritual to us and has a major meaning to us…’’, says Nizaam Raynard about Adhan and what it means in his Muslim religion. • February 4, 2018 - London, UK. 4th February 2018. Artist Andrew Cooper points out his sculpture of theheads of Lambeth Councillors responsible for social cleansing to Aysen Dennis from the Aylesbury Estate. Campaigners mark the third anniversary of the announcement by Network Rail of their plans to redevelop the Brixton Arches with a rally and a three minute silence. The area and its small traders who have been displaced (a few are still fighting to remain) has been described as the 'heart of Brixton'. The work was supposed to be completed by 2016 but is only scheduled to start tomorrow, and the Save Brixton Arches campaign are calling for it to be abandoned as the plans for the work fail to include proper fire safety precautions and will severely restrict access by emergency services to local businesses and the railway and station. They also call on Lambeth Council to insist that the conditions of the planning permission that included no adverse effect on the market traders in Brixton Station Road be applied, as the work as planned will produce dust and pollution which will almost certainly force those who prepare food in the area out of business. They also point out that there are no safety measures to protect local businesses, young children in the nearby crèche or the general public from potentially dangerous airborne particles during the removal of asbestos. There was also a call for an investigation into local Labour MP Helen Hayes, elected in 2015, who until she resigned shortly before the election was a senior partner in the firm Allies & Morrison which made the recommendation for the 'improvement' of the arches in 2013, though she has denied any personal involvement. A&M have been involved in many contentious 'regeneration' schemes with developers and councils across London which opponents describe as social cleansing. • August 8, 2017 - New York City, New York, United States of America - (photo: Sachelle Babbar) New Yorkers gathered at the steps of City Hall on Tuesday morning to protest alleged discrimination by landlords who refuse tenants based on their source of income. In this case, homeless who are eligible for generous city vouchers based on various issues, such as disabilities, are left to remain homeless when their vouchers are refused. The group Vocal NY also displayed Craigslist ads that contain wording that makes it apparent that renters will not take vouchers. The group has not only indicated that vouchers are often worth more than the rent asked for, but the practice of refusing them is illegal. However, the city’s offices that investigate such cases have poor track records in prosecuting this form of discrimination. (Credit Image: © Sachelle Babbar via ZUMA Wire)
