  • June 7, 2017 - inconnu - A wriggling robot able to burrow could help find victims of disasters like earthquakes. The RoboWorm could be fitted with a camera or microphone and work its way around rubble in a collapsed building or deep snow after an avalanche, and relay images to rescuers. The German industrial design company behind it says can help construction workers. It can also move easily on uneven and slippery surfaces, soft floors and in canals, pipes and ducts. The robot, inspired by a caterpillar, mirrors how the insect moves,.The motions of a caterpillar’s wriggling muscle movement are copied using magnetic of metal rings, wrapped in a durable silicone tube. The unique construction allows this robot to move on rough and uneven surfaces where more traditional tools might get stuck.Designer company Emami says RoboWorm can contort itself out of trouble.RoboWorm has two “heads” , one at each end, making it possible to move backwards without having to flip over. This lets it move backwards and forwards even in very tight spaces. It is equipped with cameras and additional sensors, for example a microphone, to make recordings possible in hard-to-reach areas such as a collapsed building in rescue work. The recordings can be sent to a receiving station immediately or stored in the device for later extraction. The device , which is still being developed, was rewarded with a special mention at the German Design Award. It rewards ground-breaking work in communication and product design.A spokesman for Emami Design said:” Flexibility and mobility, if nothing else, make RoboWorm with its camera and microphone a life-saving helper in earthquake zones where robots can for instance localise buried persons in collapsed building or under snow or rock avalanches.” # ROBOT VER DE TERRE (Credit Image: © Visual via ZUMA Press)

  • April 26, 2017 - inconnu - First class air passengers could one day be traveling in suites inspired by some of the world’s finest boutique hotels. The battle between airlines to tempt first and business class passengers is worth fighting. These high-flying passengers provide nearly half of an airline's revenue. So there is a constant search for designs. And the latest comes from London-based design company Seyourpowell.Instead of traditional seats, passengers could soon sprawl out in their own private rooms, workout in a gym, visit a spa or stretch their legs in a 'light lounge'.The idea of the shift is to give this elite group more privacy and space, as well as flexibility, allowing them to feel as if they are in a hotel rather than an airplane.Seymourpowell's First Spaces concept is billed as taking inspiration from a boutique hotel. The company has imagined an area in an Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger jet, containing six private rooms. Each room comes with a retractable door, armchair or couch that folds into a bed, a 42-inch TV screen and 'smart in-flight service system' designed to anticipate passengers' needs. The fully-enclosed suites are aimed at wealthy solo passengers or couples who don't want to be bothered or even seen by fellow travellers during a long-haul flight.Seymourpowell found there was a desire for high-end premium service after surveying passengers. The company then set out to redefine first class with the hotel-inspired suites that are less like a faceless cubicle. There would be single and double rooms A king-size bed means double rooms could be sold to solo passengers at a premium fare, while couples could book one at a price that is cheaper than two single rooms, said Seymourpowell. Each suite would have soft furnishings, storage for hand luggage, space to hang clothes, drawers for personal belongings, amenity kits, a tablet computer to control room functions and a large table that can be stowed.Passengers would control in-flight

  • A new automatic passenger drone that could revolutionize the daily commute has completed its first manned flight. California-based company Passenger Drone launched the red aerial vehicle, which has a top speed of 45mph, following months of rigorous testing. Complete with a touch-screen, the drone can be flown manually or at the touch of a button select a destination and the air vehicle takes over. It carries up to two people, is equipped with 16 electric engines and has a flight range of up to 25 minutes. Flight testing of the vertical take off and landing (VTOL) craft started in May before the first manned flight took place in August, footage of which was released this week as part of the official launch. A company spokesman explained: “The social and economic benefits of such a vehicle are numerous. “In cities around the world, traffic congestion costs commuters millions of hours every year and billions of dollars in lost productivity.” According to Passenger Drone, the average travel time to work in the United States is 25.4 minute, representing almost an hour every day. The company adds that the total cost of congestion to all drivers in the U.S. in 2016, including environmental costs, was $300 billion. The spokesman added: “On-demand aviation and manned drones has the potential to radically transform how we get from place to place, and to restore precious lost family and personal time to commuters worldwide. “Overall, the lower cost and improved flexibility provided by aerial drone technology may afford compelling solutions for individuals, businesses or governments worldwide.”. 03 Oct 2017 Pictured: California-based company Passenger Drone has launched a new automatic aerial vehicle that could revolutionize the daily commute. • September 1, 2017 - inconnu - Britain’s royal Navy has images what its submarine fleet may look like by the end of the century. And it consists of a range of vessels all inspired by ocean wildlife.Chiefs asked a team from UK engineering naval defence forum UKNEST to develop concepts. The manned and unmanned concept undersea vessels are intended to handle a variety of tasks in a future world experiencing intense competition between nations for ocean resources.Submarines may have become much more sophisticated but the basic design, construction, and missions have hardly changed in 40 years. The new tasks in the seas will be for aquaculture, mining, and industry in deep ocean areas. The Royal Navy asked UKNEST to come up with some ideas to explore how new technology can address new threats and protect British assets and freedom of navigation. The ideas bleeding-edge technology with simplified complex systems to produce more flexible and cheaper vessels. The main concept is the Nautilus 1000 mothership. Designed to look like a cross between a whale and a manta ray, the Nautilus is conceived as a command and control submarine as well as a weapons carrier. It would have an advanced autonomous systems and ''neuro-interfacing'' that would allow it to be controlled by thought. The submarine only needs a crew of about 20.Steering and depth control would use flexible wing-tips that can alter their shape like a living fish.A 3D-printed acrylic hull bonded to super-strong alloys would give the sub enough strength to withstand depths of over 1,000 metres/ (3,300 ft while providing more speed and stealth. The Nautilus would also a skin of nano-thin scales that are bonded with a material that allows them to be realigned to reduce drag and therefore noise, and absorb incoming sonar pings. For power, the Nautilus uses hybrid algae-electric propulsion in cruise mode, with a large-scale tunnel drive using bladeless fans that force through water like a smooth jet. • August 3, 2017 - inconnu - Personal devices like smartphones and computer tablets could soon be powered by energy harvested by the owner’s sunglasses.Researchers’ from Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have created a pair of sunglasses that generate electricity via solar cells that double as their lenses.Organic solar cells were chosen instead of more traditional silicon cells because they're transparent, flexible, lightweight, and can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and colours. Each solar cell lens weighs about six grams, is 1.6 mm thick, and was made to fit into a set of commercially-produced sunglass frames. The frames feature added electronics in the arms, including a microprocessor, two sensors and two displays. The lenses power those electronics, which measure and display the current illumination intensity and ambient temperature as bar graphs.Although they work best in direct sunlight, each lens is still able to generate 200 microwatts of power under indoor illumination as low as 500 lux, which is about the average lighting for most offices or living areas. That 200 microwatts is enough to power a device such as a hearing aid or a step counter. The technology could conceivably also be applied to the windows of buildings, where it would generate much more power.Head of Organic Photovoltaics Group at the institute’s Light Technology department Dr. Alexander Colsmann said:” “We bring solar power to places where other solar technologies fail.”According to Colsmann, another field of application is the integration of solar cells into buildings.Since the glass facades of many high-rise buildings must often be shaded, he called it “ an obvious option “ to use organic solar modules for transforming the absorbed light into electric power. PhD student Dominik Landerer who largely contributed to the development of the solar glasses , added: “The Solar Glasses we developed are an example of how organi

  • South Africa - Plettenberg Bay - 14 May 2020 - Alexander Ritchie holds a mantis in a garden in Plettenberg Bay. From Wikipedia "Mantises are an order (Mantodea) of insects that contains over 2,400 species in about 430 genera in 15 families. Mantises are distributed worldwide in temperate and tropical habitats. They have triangular heads with bulging eyes supported on flexible necks. Their elongated bodies may or may not have wings, but all Mantodea have forelegs that are greatly enlarged and adapted for catching and gripping prey; their upright posture, while remaining stationary with forearms folded, has led to the common name praying mantis." • Jun 18, 2017 - Space - Over the weekend of June 17-18, 2017, engineers on the ground remotely operated the International Space Station's robotic Canadarm2 to extract the Roll Out Solar Array (ROSA) experiment from the SpaceX Dragon resupply ship. The experiment will remain attached to the Canadarm2 over seven days to test the effectiveness of ROSA, an advanced, flexible solar array that rolls out like a tape measure. Traditional solar panels used to power satellites can be bulky with heavy panels folded together using mechanical hinges. This new solar array's design rolls up to form a compact cylinder for launch with significantly less mass and volume, potentially offering substantial cost savings as well as an increase in power for satellites.
