  • August 18, 2017 - Shivnibas, Nadia, India - Indian women participates in Boat Race on Churni River on the occasion of Independence Day celebration in Shivnibas, Nadia district , 95 km from Kolkata , India on Friday , 18th August, 2017. While the entire nation celebrated Independence Day on August 15, one part of India observed the national event on 18th August . It might sound strange to many but the reason behind this delayed celebration is because of a cartographic error made by Sir Cyril Radcliffe 70 years ago. On August 12, 1947 news on radio stated that India had been granted freedom but unfortunately a part of Nadia district had been awarded to East Pakistan. Pre-independent Nadia had five subdivisions: Krishnagar Sadar, Meherpur, Kusthia, Chuadanga and Ranaghat and all these areas except Nabadwip were given to East Pakistan. Celebration followed the next day and the Pakistani flag, which was raised by Muslim league in the Krishnanagar (Dist. headquarters of Nadia) was brought down and replaced with the Indian tricolour on 18 August. • By Sanjay Pandey in India for MailOnline This 40-year-old gritty man not only survived 12 hours with a 5ft long and tree branch lodged in his neck and head, but also managed to travel 60km with the (wood) staff to a private hospital in Bangalore, India. Farm labourer Nanjesha HN, who hails from Amruthur in Tumkur district of south Indian state of Karnataka, had met with a road accident and got himself impaled on the branch (3cm in diameter) on December 22. The staff pierced through his neck - entering from the left of the neck and exiting on the right side behind the ear. A team of doctors from Sparsh Hospital, Yeshwantpur, successfully removed the branch and saved his life. Four months on, the patient has recovered well and is able to narrate his own story. “On December 22, I was riding a two-wheeler from my house and was heading toward Kunigal to attend the funeral of a relative. I veered to my left to avoid an oncoming truck. But I lost my balance and impaled myself on a dried up branch lying on the ground,” said Nanjesha, still struggling to speak clearly. “It pierced through my neck and emerged on the other side from behind my ear. I was bleeding profusely and had to keep my mouth wide open, gasping for breath. At that time, I didn’t know whether I would live to see the next morning. But I never gave up and kept fighting for survival,” he added. Luckily for Nanjesha, a passersby spotted him and called an ambulance. Though the vehicle reached in 20 minutes and he was taken to the nearby Kunigal government hospital, the doctors refused to take his case. “The doctor didn’t even touch me. I was still on the ambulance, so they decided to take me to another nearby hospital in Belluru Cross,” Nanjesha recalled. From there, he was taken to a private medical college where doctors administered first aid. Since the patient’s airways were obstructed, the doctors had to do a tracheostomy near his throat to provide an air passage to help him breathe. “I w

  • Portraits of perfection: No, they're not photos, but pencil drawings by a young genius from a tough council estate..Stare closely at the pictures on this page. What do you think it took to create these beautiful images of Amy Winehouse, Mother Teresa, Princess Diana and Rihanna? An expensive camera, a precision lens, hours of trial and error from a skilled photographer?.Well, the answer is none of the above..All of these extraordinarily detailed pictures are pencil drawings, created purely by hand Ñ with no digital trickery Ñ by British artist Kelvin Okafor, whose only tools are a set of pencils, a piece of paper and the occasional stick of charcoal (though most of the pictures donÕt even require that). Yet no matter how closely one looks, thereÕs not a pencil line in sight..The artistÕs story is almost as sensational as the pictures he has been producing since he was a teenager who was too poor to leave his house to socialise. Instead of drinking and clubbing, Ofakor, now 27, stayed at home in Tottenham, North London, seeking solace in drawing. Now it looks as if heÕs on his way to fame and fortune..Today, an exhibition of his work opens at LondonÕs Science Museum Ñ and already some of his portraits are changing hands for £10,000 apiece. This week, a portrait he drew of King Hussein of Jordan is to be presented to the late monarchÕs widow, Queen Noor..Anyone can commission a portrait, though he will charge anything from £800 to £3,000 for his work. He says he prefers to work from photographs rather than real life Ñ partly because of the length of time he spends on each picture..So how does Okafor create these incredible works of art? ÔBefore I start drawing, I spend a few hours Ñ even a few days Ñ analysing the face from every angle. I usually start with the eyes. From there, I make the whole shape of the face and I work in the detail..ÔI draw in sections. IÕm right-handed so I work from left to r

  • F*** you little bear! This is the adorable Paddington Bear Christmas commercial courting controversy in the UK. The treasured children’s character is the star of the new festive advert for luxury retailer Marks and Spencer. The ad campaign for Christmas 2017 comes days before the world premiere of Paddington 2, starring an all-star British cast including Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley. But it has some viewers wondering if Paddington has a potty mouth. In the ad it’s Christmas Eve and Paddington is fast asleep but his dreams of marmalade are interrupted by a loud thud on the roof. Upon investigation, he stumbles upon a burglar and despite the burglar’s protests that he is “not Santa” the determined and good-natured bear begins to ‘help’ him deliver the presents back to where they belong. The ad is meant to end with the burglar having seen the error of his ways and thanking Paddington for the help. Viewers, however, have complained they hear the burglar saying something rather rude. As he leans in to give Paddington a grateful embrace, he whispers 'thank you little bear' in his ear. But hundreds of people watching the advert when it aired for the first time on Tuesday heard something rather different, “F*** you little bear!” A spokesperson for Marks and Spencer has said the company has no plans on changing the ad’s ending despite the complaints. The spokesperson said: “He’s saying ‘Thank you little bear” it is really clear and we won’t be changing the ad.” Twitter, however, disagrees with thousands online posting their comments about the blue ending.
