• August 15, 2017 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - Nag Panchami puja performed by the Hindus is dedicated to snake worship. Lord Vishnu reclines on snake bed, Lord Shiva has snakes coiled around his body, Goddess Parvati, Subrahmanya and Ganesha are all shown to wear snakes. Therefore snakes have all the way enjoyed a great importance in Hinduism. In fact a cobra is considered as the very form of Goddess Parvati in South India. Nag Panchami puja is observed on Shuklapksha Panchami (the fifth day of the waxing phase of moon) in the month of Savan (July – August)..On the day of Nag Panchami, people do not prepare any fried items. Only boiled and steamed foods are prepared even for the puja. The farmers do not till the land in order to avoid any possible harm to snakes. Some people observe fasting on this day and take food only in the evening..Nag Panchami is a very important observance in Hinduism believed to bestow good health and long life upon the husbands and clear all the Nag dosh families might have. The afflictions due to the position of Rahu and Ketu in the horoscopes are removed and the candidates observing the puja are blessed with prosperity, happiness and wealth. People also get relieved of dreadful dreams with snakes and also the fear of snakes in general. Snakes are considered the friends of farmers since they prey on the rats that devour the crops. Therefore this puja also has an environmental dimension. (Credit Image: © Moniruzzaman Sazal/Pacific Press via ZUMA Wire)

 • June 28, 2017 - SâO Paulo, São paulo, Brazil - A general view of Sao Paulo, on June 28, 2017. Pollution rates in São Paulo are twice as high as the ceiling established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to consider acceptable air quality. The data is part of a survey that analyzes the situation of 3,000 cities around the world. The survey focuses on the evaluation of PM 2.5 particles, the smallest and with the greatest potential to directly affect the lungs. A city can only be considered to have clean air if it presents an average of at most 10 micrograms of PM 2,5 per cubic meter. Any value above poses a health risk. For São Paulo, the rate would be 19 micrograms of PM 2,5 per cubic meter (data for 2014) - almost twice the limit defined by the WHO. (Credit Image: © Cris Faga via ZUMA Wire)

 • Nov. 9, 2013 - Traditional Xhosa culture has been unveiled in the news a lot lately for two reasons; Firstly, Nelson Mandela’s funeral. An unfortunate loss whereby all South Africans shared in mourning the death of their beloved Madiba and great leader. Secondly; the initiations in which young Xhosa boys have to endure. In December 2013, 41 boys lost their lives in an Initiation School, with many, many more around South Africa...For a Xhosa boy to become a man he has to go through an extremely tough initiation and the conditions are unbelievably bad, not to mention the horrendous hygiene issue. They get together in groups where they are taught about traditions and how to conduct oneself like a ‘proper’ (genuine) Xhosa man. They are then circumcised and sent into the bush to fend for themselves for an entire month! Circumcision is done with a blunt blade which all the boys have to share. The mortality rate is exceedingly high, as you can only imagine...In Nelson Mandela’s words (“The Long Walk To Freedom”) he explained when he experienced the first part of his own initiation:..“When I was sixteen, the regent decided that it was time that I became a man. In Xhosa tradition, this is achieved through one means only: circumcision. In my tradition, an uncircumcised male cannot be heir to his father's wealth, cannot marry or officiate in tribal rituals. An uncircumcised Xhosa man is a contradiction in terms, for he is not considered a man at all, but a boy. For the Xhosa people, circumcision represents the formal incorporation of males into society. It is not just a surgical procedure, but a lengthy and elaborate ritual in preparation for manhood. As a Xhosa, I count my years as a man from the date of my circumcision...It was a sacred time; I felt happy and fulfilled taking part in my people's customs and ready to make the transition from boyhood to manhood... • As world leaders converged on Paris for a United Nations conference on climate change, residents of Beijing and other cities in eastern China faced the most severe air pollution the nation has seen in 2015. Chinese authorities issued an "orange" air pollution alert, the second highest level on a four-tiered warning scale. They advised millions of people to stay indoors, halted construction at some sites, and ordered factories to close, according to news reports.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite acquired this natural-color image of northeastern China on November 30, 2015. The image shows extensive haze, low clouds, and fog over the region. The brightest areas are clouds or fog, which have tinges of gray or yellow because of the air pollution. Other cloud-free areas have a pall of gray haze that mostly blots out the cities below. In areas where the ground is visible, some of the landscape is covered with snow. The haze extended southwest from Beijing for hundreds of kilometers and was particularly dense in low-lying areas in the Guanzhong Plain.
On the day VIIRS acquired the image, PM2.5 measurements peaked at 666 micrograms per cubic meter of air, according to ground-based sensors at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Fine, airborne particulate matter (PM) that is smaller than 2.5 microns (about one thirtieth the width of a human hair) is considered dangerous because it is small enough to enter human lungs. Most PM2.5 aerosol particles result from the burning of fossil fuels and biomass (wood fires and agricultural burning). The World Health Organization considers PM2.5 levels to be safe when they are below 25.
Outbreaks of haze like this generally occur during the winter because of temperature inversions. Air normally cools with altitude, but during an inversion warm air settles above a layer of cool air near the surface. The warm air acts like a lid and traps pollutants near the surface, especially in basins and valleys.
