  • The latest cost-saving solution to pack passengers into airline’s cheap seats has been unveiled. Although the company producing them still call the draconian-looking devices ‘seats’ the near-standing slope could equally be termed air saddles. Unveiled this month at Hamburg’s Airplane Interiors Expo the ‘Skyrider 2.0’ is designed by Italian aerospace interior design company Aviointeriors Group. And while it might sound like something from Star Wars the Skyrider 2.0 has much simpler appeal to budget operators as according to the company it allows ‘an ultra-high density in the aircraft cabin.’ An Aviointeriors Group spokesman said: “Its main feature is the original bottom that ensures an increased upright passenger positon allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort. “The design of this seat enables to increase the passenger number by 20% allowing increasing profits for airline companies. Furthermore, Skyrider 2.0 weighs 50% less than standard economy class seats and the reduced number of components enable minimum maintenance costs. No company has yet announced plans to adopt the Skyrider 2.0 but there has been an air of resignation around the subject of standing seats since Ryanair first expressed interest in a more punishing version of the Skyrider eight years ago. Ryanair’s plans for standing on it’s budget flights were thwarted by regulators who scoffed at the idea of standing-room only in 2012 before trials were able to start. 26 Apr 2018 Pictured: Is this the awful future of flying?. It sits on a base which is dome-shaped.The bowl provides additional shade for the domed area while letting the air move freely to cool both the bowl and roof base off. The studio believes that a roof like this will help make even the smallest quantities of rain to flow off the roof and eventually coalesce into bigger drops just right for harvesting before they evaporate. It calculated that rainfall of just 5mm on a concave roof area of 923 square metres would collect 28.75 cubic metres of waterThe firm created the idea for a school design competition on Iran where 65 percent of the country has an arid or hyper arid climate. It calculated the unique design should be able to collect around 60 percent of rainwater in dry-lands on the Iranian plateau where the school is located.Rainwater reservoirs are placed inside the walls of the buildings. This would also help with cooling the classrooms saving on the carbon footprint.Date palms provide shade for the concave roof.A spokesman said that while the water needed for the school exceeded the amount of rainwater harvested, the key point was maximizing the efficiency of the system. The spokesman added:” Results from further research, hopefully will help lead to new designs for the roofs in arid climates capable of harvesting rain.”.OPS: The stunning concave roof design , in this case c

  • June 6, 2017 - Suisse - A new blade from the makers of the Swiss Army Knife is a cut above its rivals – having been made from recycled Nespresso coffee pod capsules. The Pioneer pocket knife by Victorinox has scales on its brown casing made from 24 recycled pods.Although convenient to use, coffee pods like those offered by Nespresso have a huge environmental footprint.Billions end up in landfills each year where they can take anywhere from 150 to 500 years to break down. But Nespresso, which has other recycling schemes around the world, has joined with Victorinox to create a limited-edition knife for 2017 that uses melted down and recast aluminium capsules as the scales on its handle;.The knife’s tools include a blade, can opener, two screwdrivers , bottle opening, wine stripper and a hole punch. It is available from the company’s online store or a few selected stores for around €43 Euros / $48 USD / £37 GBPA Victorinox spokesman said:” Sustainability is an important part of corporate culture at Victorinox as well as at Nespresso. “Both firms have long committed themselves to acting responsibly and so it seemed a natural progression to team up to create a knife which turns recycled Nespresso capsules into a functional tool for your everyday adventures.“Used Nespresso capsules must be melted down and then cast. “We wanted to be absolutely certain that the molten material could stand up to our stringent high quality standards, so we carried out numerous tests in our development laboratory, ensuring that the new material would be stable, durable and fitting all design requirements.“We are proud to say that all of our efforts were fruitful, with both partners delighted with the quality and success of the Pioneer Nespresso knife. “We’re very happy to be writing a bit of Swiss recycling history, together with Nespresso.” # UN COUTEAU SUISSE FAIT AVEC DES CAPSULES NESPRESSO RECYLCEES (Credit Image
