• EXCLUSIVE: An epic clash of the titans has been caught on camera which saw one angry rhino mum scare off 15 ELEPHANTS Carpenter Martin Meyer was visiting a national park in South Africa when he spotted a rhino mum with her young calf. Martin has been visiting the park for 20 years on and off and often drives there for a ‘builder’s break’ between jobs. But never in all the years he’s been visiting had he seen anything like this before, when one rhino mum faced-off against a whole herd of elephants. Martin’s amazing images were taken around 4.20pm when he came across the brewing confrontation. Martin, who is not naming the park to protect the rhino mother, said: “Armed with an incredibly beautiful horn and her motherly instinct the mother rhino stood her ground and protected the calf, although she was completely outnumbered by the elephants. “A herd of about 15 elephants consisting of a matriarch and a few youngsters and a few sub adult bulls were approaching and going to cross the path of the mum and the calf. “The rhino mum looked intently in their direction and the ellies seemed oblivious to her and the calf and kept encroaching on her personal space. “When they were around 20 metres away from her position she exploded into a sprint with the baby following and ran directly towards the elephants sending them scattering in all directions, with a massive cloud of dust as a result. “After recovering from the initial shock the elephant herd regrouped and aligned themselves next to one another to slowly move closer to the rhino mum, almost taunting her. Some of the young bulls even moved around and circled them from behind.” More than three minutes of stand-off followed as the stare down continued between the rhino mother and the matriarch of the ellies. Martin said: “My adrenaline was pumping and I was holding my breath for what might happen next, my wife always jokes with me that I stop breathing when I see special stuff in the bush. “As the d

 • Delighted TV star James Corden has scored his Christmas wish for his family - moving into his luxury mansion in Los Angeles. Corden has moved his family and new baby into the new home - even though workers are still adding the final touches to his renovations. The star made sure that the home had a festive feel too having workers put up decorations around his estate to make his family feel in the festive mood. Noticeable changes are the front of the home, where the torn up driveway lawn has now been replaced with pristine looking turf, understood to be drought resistant grass. Locals say that Corden had carpenters working on the upstairs of the home, along with the back garden. They are delighted that the builders and contractors have removed the giant unsightly rubbish cart, which was parked outside the property. The teams of workmen had been on a tight schedule given that the family were meant to have moved into the home in late September. Corden had hoped, when he bought the home in the spring, that his family would enjoy their first Christmas there - and that dream has come true. His wife Julia, who gave birth to their third child last week, has been overseeing the move from their rented home in Pacific Palisades. While Corden, host of the CBS Late Late Show, has been working, she has been instructing cleaners, electricians, landscapers and gardeners at the lavish home. The good news for Corden is that he had saved plenty of cash from the $10m house purchase. The shrewd entertainer negotiating a whopping $1.25m off its original asking price and has now used that saved cash to renovate his place. The former Gavin and Stacy actor is just two and half years into his run as a late night US TV host after locking in a five year deal. He publicly has said that he has no idea whether he will remain in Los Angeles, but his purchase and extensive renovation plans seem to indicate he is in for the long haul. In 1985, sand and coral dominated the Red Sea coast in an area about 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of Hurghada, Egypt. Aside from a lone road that ran along the coast, the desert landscape was largely untouched by human activity. Three decades later, development has radically reshaped the coastline.
The construction of El Gouna, a resort town, began in 1989. Building proceeded in waves, with a small cluster of summer holiday homes eventually morphing into a year-round community of about 23,000 people. As of 2015, El Gouna included 16 hotels, some 2,700 villas, 3 marinas, an 18-hole golf course, and hundreds of restaurants and shops.
Developers were not content to simply build on the existing landscape. To give
seaside views and easy access to the water to as many El Gouna residents and guests as possible, builders dredged huge amounts of sand from coastal bays and inlets to sculpt the canals, marinas, hotels, and artificial islands of the resort.
The changes to the coast are evident in this pair of natural-color images acquired by sensors on Landsat satellites. The top image was captured by the Thematic Mapper (TM) on Landsat 5 in 1985; the bottom image was captured by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 in 2014.
While El Gouna has pledged to become a carbon neutral town, the resort has come with a cost for the local environment, particularly the coral reef ecosystems that make the area so appealing. Construction of coastal hotels and other infrastructure often involved the destruction of fringing reefs along the coastlines, caused by the dredging or dumping of large amounts of sediment.
While it is difficult to distinguish between reefs, underwater sand, sea grass, and algae in natural-color Landsat imagery, some scientists have used other wavelengths to track changes in corals near El Gouna and neighboring Hurghada. The findings indicate the reefs may be in trouble. According to one study, corals near Hurghada
