  • August 15, 2017 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - Nag Panchami puja performed by the Hindus is dedicated to snake worship. Lord Vishnu reclines on snake bed, Lord Shiva has snakes coiled around his body, Goddess Parvati, Subrahmanya and Ganesha are all shown to wear snakes. Therefore snakes have all the way enjoyed a great importance in Hinduism. In fact a cobra is considered as the very form of Goddess Parvati in South India. Nag Panchami puja is observed on Shuklapksha Panchami (the fifth day of the waxing phase of moon) in the month of Savan (July – August)..On the day of Nag Panchami, people do not prepare any fried items. Only boiled and steamed foods are prepared even for the puja. The farmers do not till the land in order to avoid any possible harm to snakes. Some people observe fasting on this day and take food only in the evening..Nag Panchami is a very important observance in Hinduism believed to bestow good health and long life upon the husbands and clear all the Nag dosh families might have. The afflictions due to the position of Rahu and Ketu in the horoscopes are removed and the candidates observing the puja are blessed with prosperity, happiness and wealth. People also get relieved of dreadful dreams with snakes and also the fear of snakes in general. Snakes are considered the friends of farmers since they prey on the rats that devour the crops. Therefore this puja also has an environmental dimension. (Credit Image: © Moniruzzaman Sazal/Pacific Press via ZUMA Wire)

  • November 2, 2018 - Dhaka, Bangladesh - DHAKA, BANGLADESH - NOVEMBER 02 : Christian devotees observe All Souls' Day, known as the Feast of All Souls, Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed in Dhaka , Bangladesh on November 02, 2018...On this day, Christians come to the graveyard and pray for the departed souls of their loved ones..All Soul's Day is a Roman Catholic day of remembrance for friends and loved ones who have passed away. This comes from the ancient Pagan Festival of the Dead, which celebrated the Pagan belief that the souls of the dead would return for a meal with the family. Candles in the window would guide the souls back home, and another place was set at the table. Children would come through the village, asking for food to be offered symbolically to the dead, and then donated to feed the hungry..The importance of All Souls Day was made clear by Pope Benedict XV (1914-22), when he granted all priests the privilege of celebrating three Masses on All Souls Day: one, for the faithful departed; one for the priest's intentions; and one for the intentions of the Holy Father. Only on a handful of other very important feast days are priests allowed to celebrate more than two Masses. (Credit Image: © Zakir Hossain Chowdhury/ZUMA Wire)
