  • June 24, 2017 - London, UK - London, UK. 24th September 2017. Several hundred attended Unite Against Fascism's protest against the EDL, some gathering on the corner of Northumberland Avenue close to the advertised WDL meeting point at Charing Cross where only a handful of the EDL turned up, with rather more meeting at the Wetherspoons on Whitehall. There were a few minor scuffles with EDL protesters on their way to the pub, but several hundred police kept the two groups apart, moving the UAF down to their assigned rally point on the Embankment before escorting the EDL to another location a couple of hundred yards away. After the EDL had been escorted back to the station, the UAF marched to join the women's rally at Downing St against Theresa May's collusion with the UDP to prop up her minority government. • May 20, 2017 - London, UK - London, UK. 20th May 2017. People protest outside The Guardian in London calling for an end to the lies and censorship of the UK press about the events in Venezuela. They say that the current unrest is a right-wing coup attempt to overthrow President Maduro and the working class Bolivarian revolution, backed by the US, which the privately-owned Venezuelan press misrepresents as 'pro-democracy' protests and fails to report their attacks on hospitals, schools and socialist cities which have led to many deaths. The protest was at The Guardian as that paper recently called for democratically-elected socialist president Nicolas Maduro to be given ‘pariah status’, constantly backed attempts to undermine former President Chavez and has failed to report the mass mobilisations by working-class supporters to protect the government and its reforms which have decreased poverty, provided free health care and education, devolved power into the hands of local collectives and built homes for the working class. The protest was opposed by a small group of Venezualans who called Maduro a murderer. Peter Marshall ImagesLive (Credit Image: © Peter Marshall/ImagesLive via ZUMA Wire)

  • April 28, 2018 - London, UK. 28th April 2018. Unite workers pose with a large poster 'Remember the Dead. Fight for the Living' at the start of the International Workers’ Memorial Day rally at the statue of a building worker on Tower Hill remembering all those killed at work, around 500 in the last ten years, mainly in the construction industry, as well as those injured, disabled and made unwell, almost all in preventable incidents. The actual number of work-related deaths is several orders of magnitude greater, estimated at over 150 per day, but the official figures only include those actually killed at work for which accident reports have been submitted - and not for example the 18,000 that die years after exposure from work-related cancers. The Government 'red tape initiative' has resulted in fewer and less rigorous safety inspections and the removal of many important safety checks that protect workers. At the centre of the event was a coffin with a pair of empty boots and a hard hat, and after the speeches by Peter Kavanagh, secretary London & Eastern Region Unite, Helen Clifford, a solicitor working on workplace deaths, Moyra Samuels of Justice4Grenfell and Gail Cartmel, Assistant General Secretary Unite, wreaths were laid and there was a period of silence before black balloons were released, one for each worker killed this year in the construction industry. Noisy chanting continued and many of those present crossed the road to protest outside Downing St before blocking both carriageways of Whitehall. After some minutes police pushed the protesters on the southbound carriageway back onto the pavement where a rally led by Syrians continued. People were still sitting and blocking traffic on the other carriageway when I left, but police reinforcements had arrived and it looked as if the road would soon be cleared. • April 13, 2018 - London, UK. 13th September 2018. A vigil on the South Bank of the River Thames on Palestinian Prisoners Day highlights the plight of the roughly 6,500 Palestinians currently in Israeli jails, around 350 of them children. The protesters included several Palestinians and were joined by an anti-zionist ultra-orthodox Jew. Their display included an actual size drawing of an Israeli underground prison cell in which children are held in isolation. The protesters handed out leaflets and talked with those walking by, and speeches gave facts about the prisoners. In two months this year alone 1319 were imprisoned, including 274 children, 23 women and four journalists. Over 500 of these prisoners are currently held indefinitely without charge or trial under administrative detention orders. Physical torture during interrogation is standard practice, even for children, and many are sexually abused; since 1967, 72 prisoners have been tortured to death. As a part of the Israeli 'apartheid' system, Palestinians are not tried by the Israeli civil courts but by military tribunals with a 99.74% conviction rate. Since 1967, roughly 1 in 5 of the entire Palestinian population have been held in prison at some time. The protest, organised by Inminds human rights group, called for a boycott of Israeli goods and of companies including HP who are complicit by supplying the IT infrastructure which runs the Israeli prisons and torture dens. • February 4, 2018 - London, UK. 4th February 2018. Artist Andrew Cooper points out his sculpture of theheads of Lambeth Councillors responsible for social cleansing to Aysen Dennis from the Aylesbury Estate. Campaigners mark the third anniversary of the announcement by Network Rail of their plans to redevelop the Brixton Arches with a rally and a three minute silence. The area and its small traders who have been displaced (a few are still fighting to remain) has been described as the 'heart of Brixton'. The work was supposed to be completed by 2016 but is only scheduled to start tomorrow, and the Save Brixton Arches campaign are calling for it to be abandoned as the plans for the work fail to include proper fire safety precautions and will severely restrict access by emergency services to local businesses and the railway and station. They also call on Lambeth Council to insist that the conditions of the planning permission that included no adverse effect on the market traders in Brixton Station Road be applied, as the work as planned will produce dust and pollution which will almost certainly force those who prepare food in the area out of business. They also point out that there are no safety measures to protect local businesses, young children in the nearby crèche or the general public from potentially dangerous airborne particles during the removal of asbestos. There was also a call for an investigation into local Labour MP Helen Hayes, elected in 2015, who until she resigned shortly before the election was a senior partner in the firm Allies & Morrison which made the recommendation for the 'improvement' of the arches in 2013, though she has denied any personal involvement. A&M have been involved in many contentious 'regeneration' schemes with developers and councils across London which opponents describe as social cleansing. • September 5, 2017 - London, UK - London, UK. 5th September 2017. The second day of protests against the world's largest arms fair held in London's docklands, 'No Faith in War' was a series of events organised by various faith groups. Before I arrived there had been a lock-in on the approach road stopping deliveries coming to set up the fair through the East gate. This was followed by a Quaker meeting at the side of the road during which a number of people stood or sat to block the road and several who refused to move were arrested. Then four protesters descended on rope ladders from a bridge over the road, dangling in mid-air, with each pair holding a banner between them and blocking the road for around an hour and a half before police managed to remove them. Others stood in a circle and held a mass on the blocked road closer to the Excel Centre. At the West gate, more protesters gathered and stood in the road in front of lorries coming in, walking slowly until police removed them - and again made several arrests. As I left the Anglican Pacifist Fellowship was singing Peace songs and later there were to be prayers from the Midlands Peace Group and Pax Christi. Vedanta is a FTSE 250 British mining company controlled and 69.6% owned by Anil Agarwal and his family through a series of tax havens and holding companies and was launched on the Stock Exchange in 2003 with help from the UK’s Department for International Development (DfID) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) who continue to support it. A cleaner holds up a poster 'No to Nepotism'' at the protest by the Cleaners and Allied Independent Workers Union (CAIWU) outside Facebook's offices in London against the 'Ugly Face of Facebook' calling for the cleaners there to be paid the London Living Wage and for a proper investigation into allegations of racism, bullying and nepotism by the manager on site. There are two redundant levels of management at these offices; rather than employing cleaners directly, Facebook uses the property management company JLL who use Peartree cleaning services to employ the cleaners; money which should go to the workers goes to these unnecessary levels of management and profit. Security staff at the site watched the protest, leading away several people who tried to interfere with it, and CAIWU were thanked for shortening their planned noisy protest to avoid undue interference with a community Mela taking place in the square. Several people from Peartree also came to watch the protest and their commercial director Stuart Conroy came for a brief discussion with the protest organiser Alberto Durango after the protest ended. • June 18, 2017 - London, UK - London, UK. 18th June 2017. Nicola Curtis who was also elected by residents to be a member of the Resident Engagement Panel speaks about the managed neglect of the estate and reveals that Lambeth Council have now said they will no longer engage with her and Karne Bennett despite their having been elected by estate residents. They are continuing the campaign to save the Central Hill Estate, passed for demolition by the council despite the almost unanimous vote of residents for plans to refurbish rather than demolish and the plans by Architects for Social Housing which would acheive the increase in density desired without demolition. THe estate was planned by borough architect Ted Hollamby as a living community and was built to exceptional standards and was remarkably successful, with a number of original residents from the 1970s still living there and wanting to continue to do so. When it was built the Labour council believed that nothing was too good for the working people and the estate is still in remarkably sound condition despite a deliberate process of managed neglect - like that which had resulted in the Grenfell Tower disaster - by Lambeth Council to over the past 20 or so years to promote its demolition.
