  • July 13, 2017 - inconnu - A private company has announced a plan to prospect for minerals from the Moon by 2020.Moon Express will launch an unmanned craft which will take samples from the lunar surface before returning to Earth,It also eventually intends to set up a permanent lunar research outpost.Moon Express is also a major contender in internet giant Google’s Lunar Xprize competition which will award $20 million USD to the first privately-funded company to land a spacecraft on the Moon. One of the primary benchmarks to win the Xprize competition is that any contender must launch their expedition before the end of 2017.The company has outlined three expeditions that will roll out over the next few years starting with Lunar Scout at the end of 2017. This first expedition will demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of the approach, and carry several payloads to the lunar surface including the International Lunar Observatory and several scientific instruments as part of a research project called MoonLight. The second expedition, to be launched in 2018, is set to explore the Moon's South Pole. A lunar research outpost will be established to prospect for water and useful materials. The third expedition dubbed Harvest Moon will begin the company's business phase of what it is calling ''lunar resource prospecting''. This mission will include the delivery back to Earth of the first commercially-obtained moon samples.Moon Express also revealed more detail on the crafts that have been developed to achieve these lofty goals. The MX-1 is proposed as the initial spacecraft to embark on the first expedition. Referred to as similar in size and shape to the Star Wars R2-D2 droid, the craft function like building blocks and can be reconfigured to expand overall payload. The MX-5 is described as the ''lunar workhorse'' and can be fitted with a variety of configurations incorporating MX-1 systems. The MX-9, lined up for the 2020 expedition, is the most comprehensive craft of the c

  • May 4, 2017 - inconnu - Settlers on the Moon could build settlements using bricks made from surface dust baked solid by solar rays.Scientists at the European Space Agency have unveiled a 3D printing process using lunar materials mixed with a binding salt. These are then cooked into a solid brick using concentrated sunlight. To test the new process the researchers used a simulated moon dust composed of terrestrial volcanic materials and baked in a solar furnace. The furnace uses147 curved mirrors to focus sunlight into a high-temperature beam that melts the simulated moondust into a solid. Materials engineer Advenit Makaya who worked on the project, said the process was done on a 3D printer table and baked successive 0.1 mm layers of moon dust at 1,000° C / 1,832° F.He added that a single building brick measuring 20cms x 10cms x 3 cms can be made in about five hours. The tests show this method could be a feasible form of lunar construction, with the bricks reportedly being as strong as gypsum,More tests are needed to understand how transferable the process to the different conditions found on the lunar surface.A follow-up project dubbed RegoLight is set to explore the potential for these construction processes to be applied to lunar environments.Makaya added:’ ''Our demonstration took place in standard atmospheric conditions, but RegoLight will probe the printing of bricks in representative lunar conditions: a vacuum and high-temperature extremes.”The method could have uses back on Earth such as offering new ways to construct emergency housing in situations where transporting building resources may be costly or time-consuming. The ESA's materials and processes division chief Tommaso Ghidini said: ''3D printing of civil structures using solar power and in-situ resources could support rapid construction of post-disaster emergency shelters, removing long, costly and often inefficient supply chains.”Earlier this year researchers at the University of

Businesses that line the canal weve evicted about two years and the walkways along the canal were renovated. Loy Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. Loy means 'to float', while krathong refers to the usually lotus-shaped container which floats on the water. Traditional krathongs are made of the layers of the trunk of a banana tree or a spider lily plant. Now, many people use krathongs of baked bread which disintegrate in the water and feed the fish. A krathong is decorated with elaborately folded banana leaves, incense sticks, and a candle. A small coin is sometimes included as an offering to the river spirits. On the night of the full moon, Thais launch their krathong on a river, canal or a pond, making a wish as they do so. The krathongs made at the Klong Ong Ang fair were made out of bread so they would decompose and feed the fish in the canal. Loy Krathong will be celebrated on November 22 this year.
