• August 19, 2019 - Amazon Rainforest - In the Amazon rainforest, fire season has arrived. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite captured these images of several fires burning in the states of Rondonia, Amazonas, Para, and Mato Grosso on August 11 and August 13, 2019. In the Amazon region, fires are rare for much of the year because wet weather prevents them from starting and spreading. However, in July and August, activity typically increases due to the arrival of the dry season. Many people use fire to maintain farmland and pastures or to clear land for other purposes. Typically, activity peaks in early September and mostly stops by November. (Credit Image: © NASA Earth/ZUMA Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)

Even for a nation known for eye-popping rates of urbanization, what has happened along China's Pearl River Delta (Zhu San Jiao)
over the past few decades is extraordinary.
In 1988, an interlacing network of rivers and streams flowed through fertile alluvial soils full of rice paddies, wheat fields, mulberry orchards, and fish ponds. At that time, the region was mostly rural, with a population of roughly 10 million people scattered between several medium-sized cities, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Foshan, and Dongguan. Nearly three decades later, these cities have grown so rapidly that they have merged into an interconnected megalopolis with a population (42 million) greater than that of Australia, Argentina, or Canada.
The satellite images above illustrate the dramatic growth. The bottom image was acquired by the Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5 on November 24, 1988; the top image was acquired by the Operational Land Imager on Landsat 8 on November 16, 2014. Rural areas - mainly farmland and forest - appear green. Urban areas are gray and white. Turn on the comparison tool to slide between the two images, and download the large images to observe the changes on a much finer scale.
If taken as one entity, the Pearl River Delta region has overtaken Tokyo as the world's largest urban area - by size and population - according to an analysis of satellite and demographic data published by the World Bank. Between 2000 and 2010, the Pearl River Delta's urban spaces - defined as areas where the built environment covered more than 50 percent of the landscape in a given pixel - had expanded from 4,500 square kilometers to 7,000 square kilometers. (In 2010, Tokyo had a population of about 32 million people and covered about 5,600 square kilometers.) In the study, researchers used satellite data collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and land cover data from the Landsat program. They also used demographic data pr

 • Feb 11, 2016 - Argentina - Pleiades image of Guitar Forest Argentina. Pedro Martin Ureta created a piece of land art so that it could be viewed from an airplane. It turns out that it is visible from space, too. In the fertile lowland plains of Argentina (the Pampas), a guitar-shaped forest grows amidst the farmland. The project was started in 1979 by Ureta on his farm near the town of Laboulaye, and it has become a wonder for pilots and passengers flying over the region. Together with his children, Ureta created the forest in a tribute to his wife, Graciela, who died during childbirth in 1977. News reports claim that Ureta has never seen his creation from the air, except for photos from friends. (Credit Image: © Airbus DS/Airbus DS via ZUMA Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)

 • March 22, 2019 - Qalqilya, West Bank, 22th March 2019. Cashes occur between Palestinian demonstrators and the Israeli army in the West Bank town of Kafr Qaddum. Since 2003, the road between Kafr Qaddum and Nablus has been blocked to Palestinians and left open only to Israeli settlers and the Israeli army although an Israeli court ruled the roadblock illegal. The roadblock makes it impossible for Palestinians to reach their farmlands by car and lengthens the distance to Nablus of 14 Km. Up until 2013 Israel has confiscated 2,031 dunums of Kafer Qaddum agricultural land for the nearby Israeli settlements of Kedumim Zefon, Jit, and Giv'at HaMerkaziz, which are all part of the main Kedumin settlement. Weekly Friday demonstrations have been held since July 2011 to demand the reopening of the road to Nablus and against the expansion of the Kedumin settlement. Israeli settlements in the West Bank have been built and extended in contravention of international law (Credit Image: © Mohammed Turabi/IMAGESLIVE via ZUMA Wire)
