• zReportage.com Story of the Week # 635 - The Fall of Mosul - Launched July 5, 2017 - Full multimedia experience: audio, stills, text and or video: Go to zReportage.com to see more - The United Nations estimates that tens of thousands of civilians are still trapped inside the Old City of Mosul. In the weeks leading up to the operation to retake the Old City the UN and human rights groups warned the Iraqi government against the use of 'wide-area' explosive weapons, where houses are tightly packed and the civilian population is dense. A commander from the Iraqi Rapid Response Division stated of the thousands of civilians still trapped inside the old city, many are believed to have been brought from other areas by ISIS to be used as human shields. Iraqi forces reduced their advance through the last streets in Mosul controlled by Islamic State (ISIS) where militants and civilians are jammed in tightly together into a shrinking rectangle no more than 300 by 500 meters beside the Tigris river, their last holdout in Mosul. But the resistance and fighting has been fierce. The number of Islamic State militants fighting in Mosul, by far the biggest city it has ever controlled, has dropped from thousands at the start of the U.S. backed offensive over eight months ago to just a couple of hundred, according to the Iraqi military. With Mosul gone, the group's territory in Iraq will be limited to a few areas west and south of the city where some tens of thousands of civilians live. In the 1980s, the landscape around Al
Ain - a small city in the United Arab Emirates - was dominated by the colors of the Arabian desert: tan, orange, and brown. Three decades later, green is the color that is difficult to ignore.
The Thematic Mapper on Landsat 5 acquired the top image on April 29, 1984. The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired the lower image on July 24, 2015. Turn on the image comparison tool to slide between the two images.
In 1984, green areas were mostly limited to the large oasis in the historic center of the city. By 2015, several new parks, farms, nature preserves, and palace gardens had emerged, particularly to the south and west of the city. As noted in one recent study, the city now contains 12 million square meters of green space - an average of 32 square meters (344 square feet) per resident, more than any other city in the Arab world. The population has expanded rapidly as well, rising from about 50,000 people in 1975 to more than 630,000 in 2012. The expansion of urban areas - gray in the images - has primarily proceeded westward from the city center due to an abundance of open space and the presence of transportation, water, and power infrastructure.
Green Mubazzarah is one of the most noticeable new green spaces. Located south of the city, at the base of a 1,200-meter mountain called Jebel Hafeet, the park is irrigated by underwater springs. Several other sprawling expanses of green have grown up along the outskirts of the city, including the Al Rawdha and Al Maqam palaces and several farms. One of the largest farms in the city, operated by Al Foah, produces dates on 1,320 hectares.
Although Al Ain's climate is quite arid, the presence of a large oasis along the eastern edge of the city has made greening the city possible. While most cities in the United Arab Emirates have seen water tables fall significantly as consumption increases, groundwater levels have instead risen in some

fall foliage along the Kolyma River in eastern Siberia on September 9, 2015. The lower image shows a broader view. Notice how no green vegetation remains visible in the northernmost part of the image. Meanwhile, valleys and other low-elevation areas still have plenty of green farther to the south.
In autumn, the leaves on deciduous trees change colors as they lose chlorophyll, the molecule that plants use to synthesize food. However, chlorophyll is not a stable compound and plants have to continuously produce it, a process that requires ample sunlight and warm temperatures. When temperatures drop and days shorten, levels of chlorophyll do as well.
Chlorophyll makes plants appear green because it absorbs red and blue sunlight as it strikes leaf surfaces. As concentrations of chlorophyll drop, the green fades, offering a chance for other leaf pigments - carotenoids and anthocyanins - to show off their colors. Carotenoids absorb blue-green and blue light, appearing yellow; anthocyanins absorb blue, blue-green, and green light, appearing red.
