• EXCLUSIVE: The dense population of Cape fur seals July 27, 2017 at this time of year attracts the seal's main predator, the flying Great White Shark. Seal Island and the adjacent waters provide rare opportunities for those who wish to witness attacks by White Sharks on the Cape Fur Seal and to observe social interactions amongst creatures of both species. The island is well known for the way the sharks ambush their prey: a shark launching an attack will come up from underneath and often hurl itself out of the water with the seal in its jaws. It has been shown that if the seals enter the "Ring of Death" (where the sharks circle the island) on the surface instead of at the murky bottom, they are more likely to be picked off by the faster and more aggressive Great White Shark. • zReportage.com Story of the Week # 635 - The Fall of Mosul - Launched July 5, 2017 - Full multimedia experience: audio, stills, text and or video: Go to zReportage.com to see more - The United Nations estimates that tens of thousands of civilians are still trapped inside the Old City of Mosul. In the weeks leading up to the operation to retake the Old City the UN and human rights groups warned the Iraqi government against the use of 'wide-area' explosive weapons, where houses are tightly packed and the civilian population is dense. A commander from the Iraqi Rapid Response Division stated of the thousands of civilians still trapped inside the old city, many are believed to have been brought from other areas by ISIS to be used as human shields. Iraqi forces reduced their advance through the last streets in Mosul controlled by Islamic State (ISIS) where militants and civilians are jammed in tightly together into a shrinking rectangle no more than 300 by 500 meters beside the Tigris river, their last holdout in Mosul. But the resistance and fighting has been fierce. The number of Islamic State militants fighting in Mosul, by far the biggest city it has ever controlled, has dropped from thousands at the start of the U.S. backed offensive over eight months ago to just a couple of hundred, according to the Iraqi military. With Mosul gone, the group's territory in Iraq will be limited to a few areas west and south of the city where some tens of thousands of civilians live. • Although only a sliver of Saturn's sunlit face is visible in this view, the mighty gas giant planet still dominates the view. From this vantage point just beneath the ring plane, the dense B ring becomes dark and essentially opaque, letting almost no light pass through. But some light reflected by the planet passes through the less dense A ring, which appears above the B ring in this photo. The C ring, silhouetted just below the B ring, lets almost all of Saturn's reflected light pass right through it, as if it were barely there at all. The F ring appears as a bright arc in this image, which is visible against both the backdrop of Saturn and the dark sky. (For a diagram showing the names and positions of the rings see Expanse of Ice .)This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 7 degrees below the ring plane. The image was taken in green light with the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera on Jan. 18, 2017.

 • August 9, 2017 - inconnu - Here’s a farm for the big city – which fits on the back of a bicycle. The idea is to bring the experinces of urban farming to a larger community. The aptly named Bike Share Farm is a solar-powered planting system on wheels. Placed a top two interconnected bicycles, the hydroponic farm can be ridden from place to placeIt was inspired by bike share systems now prevalent in many major cities. The frame of the Bike Share Farm also allows for bicycles to be interchangeable. At each stop a new cyclist can attach his bike to the structure, replacing the existing bike. It was created by China’s People's Industrial Design Office , known as PIDO .A team designed and built it during a 72 hour hack-athon in Seoul , South Korea organised by Art Center Nabi. The project asked people to consider the theme of sharing technology and ecologvy in large conurbations.Design rofessionals were asked to generate ideas on urban and ecological issues. Seoul is a massive city with many high-rise buildings but fe garden spaces for the I habitants. • August 3, 2017 - inconnu - Patients with neurological disease or brain tumours could have a window fitted into the skull to allow utrasound surgery.Ultrasound is already utilized to treat brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. It can also be used to kill cancer cells and to dissolve stroke-causing blood clots. Unfortunately, the thickness and density of the skull absorbs or reflects much of the ultrasound before it reaches the brain, making treatments less effective than they would be otherwise. Ultrasound sound waves are at a higher frequency than those audible to humans. However, the human skull is between 2 mm and 8 mm thick and relatively dense, meaning that most sound waves are reflected or absorbed before they make it into the brain. Now researchers have come up with a solution be creating a window on the brain. Developed by scientists at the University of California, Riverside along with colleagues from three Mexican research institutes, the window actually consists of an implant which is located beneath the scalp, replacing part of the cranium bone. It's made from a ceramic material known as Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), which is biocompatible, extremely hard and shatter-resistant. Due to these qualities, it's already used in applications such as dental crowns and hip replacements. The material also has a very low porosity, which allows targeted ultrasound waves to easily pass through during repeated treatment sessions. .The window would overcome this proiblems.A previous version of the technology has already been developed to let therapeutic laser light pulses get through to the brain, which is currently in pre-clinical trials.Study co-leader Prof. Guillermo Aguilar said: ''Developing an optically and radio-frequency transparent cranial implant was already an exciting accomplishment.“We continue to work to make this implant a reality.”''Proving that ultrasound could be transmitted through the implant could expand its thera

 • As world leaders converged on Paris for a United Nations conference on climate change, residents of Beijing and other cities in eastern China faced the most severe air pollution the nation has seen in 2015. Chinese authorities issued an "orange" air pollution alert, the second highest level on a four-tiered warning scale. They advised millions of people to stay indoors, halted construction at some sites, and ordered factories to close, according to news reports.
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite acquired this natural-color image of northeastern China on November 30, 2015. The image shows extensive haze, low clouds, and fog over the region. The brightest areas are clouds or fog, which have tinges of gray or yellow because of the air pollution. Other cloud-free areas have a pall of gray haze that mostly blots out the cities below. In areas where the ground is visible, some of the landscape is covered with snow. The haze extended southwest from Beijing for hundreds of kilometers and was particularly dense in low-lying areas in the Guanzhong Plain.
On the day VIIRS acquired the image, PM2.5 measurements peaked at 666 micrograms per cubic meter of air, according to ground-based sensors at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Fine, airborne particulate matter (PM) that is smaller than 2.5 microns (about one thirtieth the width of a human hair) is considered dangerous because it is small enough to enter human lungs. Most PM2.5 aerosol particles result from the burning of fossil fuels and biomass (wood fires and agricultural burning). The World Health Organization considers PM2.5 levels to be safe when they are below 25.
Outbreaks of haze like this generally occur during the winter because of temperature inversions. Air normally cools with altitude, but during an inversion warm air settles above a layer of cool air near the surface. The warm air acts like a lid and traps pollutants near the surface, especially in basins and valleys.
• Jun 8, 2017 - Space - In biology, 'symbiosis' refers to two organisms that live close to and interact with one another. Astronomers have long studied a class of stars ? called symbiotic stars ? that co-exist in a similar way. Using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, astronomers are gaining a better understanding of how volatile this close stellar relationship can be. R Aquarii (R Aqr, for short) is one of the best known of the symbiotic stars. Located at a distance of about 710 light years from Earth, its changes in brightness were first noticed with the naked eye almost a thousand years ago. Since then, astronomers have studied this object and determined that R Aqr is not one star, but two: a small, dense white dwarf and a cool red, giant star. (Credit Image: ? • Astronomers have produced a highly detailed image of the Crab Nebula, by combining data from telescopes spanning nearly the entire breadth of the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves seen by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to the powerful X-ray glow as seen by the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory. And, in between that range of wavelengths, the Hubble Space Telescope's crisp visible-light view, and the infrared perspective of the Spitzer Space Telescope. The Crab Nebula, the result of a bright supernova explosion seen by Chinese and other astronomers in the year 1054, is 6,500 light-years from Earth. At its center is a super-dense neutron star, rotating once every 33 milliseconds, shooting out rotating lighthouse-like beams of radio waves and light -- a pulsar (the bright dot at image center). The nebula's intricate shape is caused by a complex interplay of the pulsar, a fast-moving wind of particles coming from the pulsar, and material originally ejected by the supernova explosion and by the star itself before the explosion. This image combines data from five different telescopes: The VLA (radio) in red; Spitzer Space Telescope (infrared) in yellow; Hubble Space Telescope (visible) in green; XMM-Newton (ultraviolet) in blue; and Chandra X-ray Observatory (X-ray) in purple. The new VLA, Hubble, and Chandra observations all were made at nearly the same time in November of 2012. A team of scientists led by Gloria Dubner of the Institute of Astronomy and Physics (IAFE), the National Council of Scientific Research (CONICET), and the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina then made a thorough analysis of the newly revealed details in a quest to gain new insights into the complex physics of the object. They are reporting their findings in the Astrophysical Journal."Comparing these new images, made at different wavelengths, is providing us with a wealth of new detail about the Crab Nebula. Though the Crab has been studied extensively for years, we still have

 • An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photograph of the strange rounded shapes along the coastline of Zambia's Chilubi Island. The light-toned sand island stands out from the dark waters of Lake Bangweulu.
In the photo we see a few patches of open water between the fingers of the island. The waters are crowded by areas of aquatic vegetation and wetland (reeds, papyrus, and floating grass) in green. Lake Bangweulu, which is only 4 meters (13 feet) deep on average, is rich enough to supply fish for the copper-mining towns to the west.
Chilubi Island has 100 kilometers (60 miles) of coastline, providing prime access to the richest fishing waters in northern Zambia. Those coastlines are smoothed by easterly winds that erode ancient sand dunes. The narrow strips of lighter toned land along the shorelines are areas that have been mostly denuded of vegetation by residents of the densely populated fishing villages.
The explorer and missionary David Livingstone was the first European to visit the lake (1868).
Astronaut photograph ISS044-E-00661 was acquired on June 14, 2015, with a Nikon D4 digital camera using an 1150 millimeter lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 44 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by M. • October 9, 2017 - Santa Rose, California, U.S. - Parts of northern California have been ravaged by intense and fast-burning wildfires that broke out on October 8, 2017. Blazes that started on a few hundred acres around Napa Valley were fanned by strong northeasterly winds, and by October 10, the 14 fires had consumed as much as 100,000 acres (150 square miles) of land. States of emergency have been declared in Napa, Sonoma, Yuba, and Mendocino counties, and thousands of people were asked to evacuate. The densely populated "wine country" is famous for its vineyards and wine-making operations and the tourists they attract. In the late morning of October 9, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite acquired a natural-color image (top) of the smoke billowing from the fires. About two hours later, the MODIS instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite captured the second view. (Credit Image: © NASA Earth/ZUMA Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)
