• EXCLUSIVE: An epic clash of the titans has been caught on camera which saw one angry rhino mum scare off 15 ELEPHANTS Carpenter Martin Meyer was visiting a national park in South Africa when he spotted a rhino mum with her young calf. Martin has been visiting the park for 20 years on and off and often drives there for a ‘builder’s break’ between jobs. But never in all the years he’s been visiting had he seen anything like this before, when one rhino mum faced-off against a whole herd of elephants. Martin’s amazing images were taken around 4.20pm when he came across the brewing confrontation. Martin, who is not naming the park to protect the rhino mother, said: “Armed with an incredibly beautiful horn and her motherly instinct the mother rhino stood her ground and protected the calf, although she was completely outnumbered by the elephants. “A herd of about 15 elephants consisting of a matriarch and a few youngsters and a few sub adult bulls were approaching and going to cross the path of the mum and the calf. “The rhino mum looked intently in their direction and the ellies seemed oblivious to her and the calf and kept encroaching on her personal space. “When they were around 20 metres away from her position she exploded into a sprint with the baby following and ran directly towards the elephants sending them scattering in all directions, with a massive cloud of dust as a result. “After recovering from the initial shock the elephant herd regrouped and aligned themselves next to one another to slowly move closer to the rhino mum, almost taunting her. Some of the young bulls even moved around and circled them from behind.” More than three minutes of stand-off followed as the stare down continued between the rhino mother and the matriarch of the ellies. Martin said: “My adrenaline was pumping and I was holding my breath for what might happen next, my wife always jokes with me that I stop breathing when I see special stuff in the bush. “As the d

This Friday, tens of thousands of kids in more of 60 countries went on strike to demand climate change action. #FridaysForFuture is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every schoolday for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. According to the Belgian police around 7500 people took the streets of Brussels, in the last climate demonstration before the EU elections. • May 1, 2019 - Matochina, Bulgaria - A view of Bukelon fortress near the village of Matochina in Southeastern Bulgaria. Bukelon is the best-preserved fortress of the late Middle Ages in today's Bulgarian lands. The local population is trying to keep this unique fortress from the raids of people living in the nearby villages that break it down to build houses. Tens of years ago, many of the houses in the region were built with stones from the fortress, after which a program to preserve it began, and now many people have decided to take stones from there to build houses, fences and other buildings. Local residents also worry about the raids of refugees coming from Turkey because the fortress and the village are about 500 meters from the border. The height of the remains of the tower is about 18 meters and they represent a magnificent view, filling the panorama of the region. The tourist flow in the area has been drastically reduced due to their concerns about refugee entry and the danger of the collapse of the fortress as a result of its indiscriminate long-standing demolition. On April 14, 1205, the Adrianople battle took place in which Tsar Kaloyan's armies defeated the knights of the Fourth Crusade and captured the master of the Latin Empire Baldwin I Flanders. • May 24, 2019 - Lisbon, Portugal - LISBON, PORTUGAL - MAY 24: Portuguese students chant and hold up placards while marching towards the Portuguese Parliament during the 'Global Strike For Future' demonstration on a global day of student protests aiming to spark world leaders into action on climate change on May 24, 2019, in Lisbon, Portugal. In a shift since the last European Parliament elections, mainstream parties have adopted climate change as a rallying cry -- spurred in part by a wave of student strikes. A Eurobarometer poll shows climate change is now a leading concern for European Union voters, not far behind economic issues and rivaling worries about migration. • On November 5, 2015, a tailings pond dam failed at an iron mine in southeastern Brazil, sending contaminated water sediment through the nearby village of Bento Rodrigues and into tributaries of the Rio Doce (Sweet River). Tailing ponds store waste left by mining operations - usually slurries of pulverized rock rich in chemicals used to process ore.
The dam failure released about 60 million cubic meters - the equivalent of 25,000 Olympic swimming pools or 187 oil tankers - of contaminated material. Floods killed at least 13 people in Bento Rodrigues and displaced several hundred people in towns and cities downstream.
Contaminated water first moved northeast through the Rio do Carmo until that river meets the Rio Piranga and becomes the Rio Doce. From there, it continued flowing northeast until the city of Governador Valadares, where the Rio Doce makes a turn to the east and heads toward Linhares and the Atlantic Ocean. As heavy mud passed Governador Valadares, a city of 280,000 people, authorities shut off the municipal water supply.
Seventeen days after the dam failed, orange-brown water reached the Atlantic Ocean. Contaminated water continued to flow into the Atlantic on November 30, 2015, when the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this natural-color image. A muddy plume of water extended several kilometers into the Atlantic Ocean.
According to news reports, the contaminated water contains high levels of mercury, arsenic, chromium, and manganese. Some scientists have expressed concern that toxins - along with a reduction in oxygen available in the water caused by the influx of silt and clay - will cause widespread harm to the river's ecosystems.
Samarco, the company that owns the iron mine, has deployed floating barriers along parts of the Rio Doce in an effort to limit ecosystem damage. The company has also dredged the river's mouth to encourage contaminated mud to flow swiftly into the sea rather than settling at its mouth.
