  • EXCLUSIVE: A company that makes underground nuclear shelters has now developed a fire bunker in the wake of the devastating California wildfires. California-based Atlas Survival Shelters is offering a range of subterranean airtight shelters that keep out killer carbon monoxide and can withstand temperatures of up to 1600F (870C). The GarNado shelter — which can protect from fire as well as nuclear fallout, earthquakes and tornadoes — starts at $20,000 for a two-person size and goes up to $50,000 for a 25-person model. Bunkers can be installed under the concrete foundations of a home when newly constructed, or sunk into the backyard for existing houses. The Montebello-based company also offers a smaller FireNado shelter, which is designed specifically to store possessions people want to protect in the event of a fire, with prices starting at $7,000. Owner Ron Hubbard said the shelters can buy occupants valuable time in a wildfire scenario and are fitted with either two or three hour fire-rated hatches and an air-tight door, providing enough natural clean air inside for the occupants for that period of time. He urged: ‘If you live in an area threatened by wildfires and want to have a chance of surviving then do something about it. ‘People need to be prepared and we also want to start a new way of thinking when it comes building and rebuilding houses in areas prone to wildfire.’ The Northern California Camp Fire, which began in Butte County earlier this month has so far claimed the lives of 77 people, with 1,000 people still unaccounted for, making it the deadliest wildfire in California history. It is currently 66 per cent contained. Meanwhile the Southern California Woolsey Fire has left three dead and is now 94 per cent contained. All the shelters available are customizable and interiors can be fitted to various specs, including high-end luxury bunkers that come compete with sofas, double beds and kitchens. 20 Nov 2018 Pictured: Atlas Survival Shelters in

  • Bill and Melinda Gates have found themselves a perfect pandemic retreat after purchasing a $43 million oceanfront mansion in California. The stunning six-bedroom, four-bathroom property is set over 5,800-square-foot and located in the picturesque coastal town of Del Mar, near San Diego. The sale, which closed on March 27, set a new record by some $8 million for the largest residential sale in the area’s history. Microsoft co-founder Gates, 64, purchased the property from Madeleine Pickens, a former wife of the billionaire oil baron T. Boone Pickens. The property was initially listed for $48million after landing on the market back in January 2019. The listing was held by Brian Guiltinan of The Guiltinan Group. The exquisite oceanfront property was built in 1999 by architect and designer Ken Ronchetti and according to the listing the house is considered ‘one of the most prominent coastal contemporary beach homes on the West Coast’. It comes complete with 120 feet of private ocean frontage, with panoramic windows in the living space opening to the patio and offering stunning ocean views. There are also wooden ceilings throughout and a stunning pool looking out to the ocean. The Gates’ new purchase is just the latest addition to their impressive property portfolio. Their man residence is a compound in Medina, Washington. They also own a horse property in nearby Rancho Santa Fe which they purchased several years ago for $18 million from weight loss guru Jenny Craig. The Gateses also purchased a large plot of land in 2016 in Wellington Florida, the equestrian capital of the Sunshine State. 24 Apr 2020 Pictured: Bill and Melinda Gates have purchased a stunning oceanfront property in Del Mar, California, for $43 million. • Redmond O’Neal, the son of actor Ryan O’Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett, has been charged with attempted murder following an alleged crime spree. The 33-year-old, who has a history of drug abuse, went on a crime spree in Venice Beach and nearby Palms neighborhoods in California last month where he went about punching or stabbing five men over several days in unprovoked attacks, according to Los Angeles Police Department. Two men were seriously injured, one of whom was stabbed in the face, police say. O’Neal was linked to the attacks after being arrested as a suspect in an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven store on May 8. LAPD said in a statement: “After O’Neal’s arrest, the violent crime spree ended and Pacific Area robbery detectives found O’Neal to strongly match the description of the suspect in these crimes. Evidence and eye witness identifications linked O’Neal to the violent crime spree.” On Friday (June 8) robbery detectives handed a file to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. O’Neal was subsequently charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of criminal threats, one count of brandishing a knife and one count of battery. He remains in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. 09 Jun 2018 Pictured: Redmond O’Neal seen in a police mugshot after being charged with attempted murder among other charges on June 8, 2018. • November 15, 2018 - Paradise, California, U.S.: Arrested for trying going home! Paradise resident, CHARLIE MILES, 27, was sitting cross legged on the ground in handcuffs, with state rangers around him, after being arrested for trying to go home, Thursday. Miles, was on a desolate stretch of Skyway Road about halfway between his family's home, in the devastated town of Paradise and the church shelter in Chico, where he has been sleeping on a cot. His crime was trying to go back home. Miles was trying to see if anything was left of his and his parents trailers. Miles rose on the morning of Nov. 8 at 5:45 am. “I had coffee with my parents like I always do,” he said. “Then I was brushing my teeth and I looked up at the sky and it was gray. At that point, I started packing their stuff.” The flames soon chased them. “I was forced to drag everyone off the property,” he said. “My dad was helping my mom and I was carrying their belongings. There were trees exploding. People were trying to drive their cars out but they couldn’t. We have lost absolutely everything we owned,” The officers drove him back to the Chico City limits and set him free. “They didn’t give me a ticket or anything,” Miles said. He said a friend was able to return to their street and told him, everything is gone. Miles and his parents are but one of scores of victims of the deadliest wildfire in California history, the Camp Fire started Nov. 8th at crack of dawn, its death toll grew today to 77, while the number of people unaccounted is over thousand people. The blaze is now, two-thirds contained, after consuming some 150,000 acres. (Credit Image: © Renee C. Byer/Sacramento Bee via ZUMA Wire)

She first won attention for her role in Fantastic Voyage (1966), after which she won a contract with 20th Century Fox. She later starred in notable films including Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Rifles (1969), and Myra Breckinridge (1970). She made several television variety specials. She carved out a place in movie history portraying strong female characters and breaking the mold of the submissive sex symbol. In 1995, Welch was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History. Playboy ranked Welch No. 3 on their 100 Sexiest Stars of the Twentieth Century list. • Aug 10, 1984 - Los Angeles, California, U.S. - American 3000 meter competitor MARY DECKER, right, runs on the inside of the track slightly behind British (South African) runner ZOLA BUDD in the 1984 Olympics. This was just after 1,600 meters had been run, on the turn into the front straightaway. The two were set up for a famous race, the American darling Decker trying to win an Olympic Gold medal after years of difficulties and disappointments versus the controversial Zola Budd, a barefoot-running teenager who grew up in South Africa and bent the Olympic rules to compete for Britain, because South Africa was banned from the games due to their apartheid policy. When the two tangled coming out of a corner on the track, Decker fell onto the infield, injuring her hip unable to finish the race. The crowd expressed their anger by booing Budd, who continued on to finish seventh. Budd later claimed to have thrown the race in order to avoid further booing from the crowd had she won. The incident is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in Olympics history. (Credit Image: © Bruce Chambers/ZUMA Wire/ZUMAPRESS.com)
