  • May 24, 2016 - Johannesburg, South Africa - The Hector Pieterson memorial in a park in Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa, 24 May 2016. On 16 June 1976, 12-year-old Hector was shot by policemen. 15,000 students demonstrated against the introduction of Afrikaans as the official language at the schools in South Africa. Afrikaans used to be the language of the white, the suppressed black population was hardly able to speak it and expected further discrimation. The nationwide protests started in Soweto.
