  • August 3, 2017 - New York City, New York, United States of America - During a public “Ivory Crush” organized by the Department of Environmental Commission (DEC), the Wildlife Conservation Society, Tiffany & Co., and environmental groups, such as 96 Elephants (the estimated number of elephants slaughtered daily), some two tons of confiscated Ivory, with a value of $8.5 million USD was crushed in NYC’s Central Park. In 2014, New York State passed a law making the trade of Ivory items a class D felony, except in certain cases with state approval. Despite this, New York City is the nation's largest port of entry for illegal wildlife goods, according to state officials..Investigative Lieutenant Jesse Paluch of the NYS DEC Department of Environmental Crimes Investigations adds that what was crushed today “was the culmination of three years of investigations and the execution of 12 search warrants”. He further adds “we want to show that the ivory on the animal is priceless, but worthless in this form as a consumer good”. Mary Dixon of WCS says “we would like to send a message to poachers and anyone involved in the illegal ivory trade that we will no longer tolerate this”. WCS works in 60 countries worldwide and works to stop animal trafficking. Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac was among the guests in attendance. (Credit Image: © Sachelle Babbar via ZUMA Wire)

  • August 3, 2017 - inconnu - Patients with neurological disease or brain tumours could have a window fitted into the skull to allow utrasound surgery.Ultrasound is already utilized to treat brain disorders such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. It can also be used to kill cancer cells and to dissolve stroke-causing blood clots. Unfortunately, the thickness and density of the skull absorbs or reflects much of the ultrasound before it reaches the brain, making treatments less effective than they would be otherwise. Ultrasound sound waves are at a higher frequency than those audible to humans. However, the human skull is between 2 mm and 8 mm thick and relatively dense, meaning that most sound waves are reflected or absorbed before they make it into the brain. Now researchers have come up with a solution be creating a window on the brain. Developed by scientists at the University of California, Riverside along with colleagues from three Mexican research institutes, the window actually consists of an implant which is located beneath the scalp, replacing part of the cranium bone. It's made from a ceramic material known as Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), which is biocompatible, extremely hard and shatter-resistant. Due to these qualities, it's already used in applications such as dental crowns and hip replacements. The material also has a very low porosity, which allows targeted ultrasound waves to easily pass through during repeated treatment sessions. .The window would overcome this proiblems.A previous version of the technology has already been developed to let therapeutic laser light pulses get through to the brain, which is currently in pre-clinical trials.Study co-leader Prof. Guillermo Aguilar said: ''Developing an optically and radio-frequency transparent cranial implant was already an exciting accomplishment.“We continue to work to make this implant a reality.”''Proving that ultrasound could be transmitted through the implant could expand its thera

  • August 3, 2017 - inconnu - Personal devices like smartphones and computer tablets could soon be powered by energy harvested by the owner’s sunglasses.Researchers’ from Germany's Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have created a pair of sunglasses that generate electricity via solar cells that double as their lenses.Organic solar cells were chosen instead of more traditional silicon cells because they're transparent, flexible, lightweight, and can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and colours. Each solar cell lens weighs about six grams, is 1.6 mm thick, and was made to fit into a set of commercially-produced sunglass frames. The frames feature added electronics in the arms, including a microprocessor, two sensors and two displays. The lenses power those electronics, which measure and display the current illumination intensity and ambient temperature as bar graphs.Although they work best in direct sunlight, each lens is still able to generate 200 microwatts of power under indoor illumination as low as 500 lux, which is about the average lighting for most offices or living areas. That 200 microwatts is enough to power a device such as a hearing aid or a step counter. The technology could conceivably also be applied to the windows of buildings, where it would generate much more power.Head of Organic Photovoltaics Group at the institute’s Light Technology department Dr. Alexander Colsmann said:” “We bring solar power to places where other solar technologies fail.”According to Colsmann, another field of application is the integration of solar cells into buildings.Since the glass facades of many high-rise buildings must often be shaded, he called it “ an obvious option “ to use organic solar modules for transforming the absorbed light into electric power. PhD student Dominik Landerer who largely contributed to the development of the solar glasses , added: “The Solar Glasses we developed are an example of how organi

  • August 3, 2017 - inconnu - A solar-powered lamp inspired by the inventor’s love of origami is bringing light to remote Third World communities and disaster zones. The collapsible SolarPuff by Solight Design is also an eco-friendly alternative to kerosene lanterns in an effort to reduce pollution. It was created by designer Professor Alice Chun after seven years of research. The flat-pack light is made of a recyclable sailcloth material and 10 bright LEDs that charge in the sun, resulting in 8-12 hours of light. There are three settings: low, high, and blinking for relief or distress. The light is waterproof and floats, and can withstand most climates. To activate it, users simply twist and pull up and use a slight push to deflate.Through Professor Chun’s charitable organisation, Focus of Architecture Art Relief Making, she helps needy communities around the globe through sustainable design and architectural solutions that will better their society, reduce pollution. It was created to be helpful in communities with no electricity, refugee camps, disaster or war zones, and other locations where pollutants are the only alternative.Prof Chun said she wanted to solve an important issue where more than a billion people around the world still don’t have good access to reliable and proper lighting. Combining her knowledge, and her love for origami, the Japanese art of paper folding , the inflatable lamp was born.It is also great for campers and hikers. Each lamp costs around $30 USD / €25 Euros / £22 GBP # LAMPE A ENERGIE SOLAIRE (Credit Image: © Visual via ZUMA Press)
