Rendering of the Bolt coaster on the Mardi Gras ship
Add to Lightbox DownloadHere's the first cruise ship in the world to feature an on-board rollercoaster. The Bolt Ultimate Sea Coaster will be on the top of the outdoor deck of Carnival Cruise Line's new Mardi Gras ship. It will reach speeds of up to 40 mph, as thrill-seekers ride motorbike-like carriages 187 feet above sea level as they enjoy 360 degree views of the ship and the ocean. And riders will be able to control how fast they go with a pedal. “Creating the first shipboard roller coaster posed quite a challenge as it’s never been done,” Glenn Aprile, Carnival Cruise Line’s Director of Innovation told US TV. “The design and movement of the ship needed to be factored in to the engineering and design, something that doesn’t need to be accounted for on a land-based coaster.” The single car electric coaster - which allows two riders to race along the track at one time - is made by German-based Maurer Rides, and takes about a minute to complete a circuit. Mardi Gras will be the largest Carnival Cruise Line ship, according to the company, with 20 decks and 5,200 rooms. The biggest cruise ship in the world is Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas. Passengers will be able to ride the Bolt from next year. Please credit Carnival Cruise Line/MEGA. 16 May 2019 Pictured: Rendering of the Bolt coaster on the Mardi Gras ship.
