Tsuruoka Tenjin Festival draws crowds
Add to Lightbox DownloadMay 25, 2019 - Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan - Tsuruoka Tenjin Festival which takes place every 25 May, honoured the deity of study and learning: Doshin Sugawara. When in former times he had to move to Kyushu, his followers hid their faces and commiserated his departure by drinking sake. Today this was re-enacted with a procession through the city in which ‘ghosts’ wore traditional dress including straw hats. They handed out sake to spectators along the route. The procession featured traditional singing, dancing and flag waving. It reached a climax in the city park where people from the crowds made blessings and ate local food.
