July 30, 2017 - Gulzar-Pora, Jammu and Kashmir, India - Kashmiri Muslims carry the body of Shariq Ahmad who was one of the two Hizb rebels killed in an overnight gun battle with Indian forces during his funeral on July 30, 2017 in Gulzar Pora, 40 kilometer (25 miles) south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir, India. Riyaz Naikoo, a top commander of Kashmir’s largest rebel group Hizbul Mujahideen, showed up along with one of his associates at the funeral of Shariq Ahmad who was one of the two Hizb rebels killed in an overnight encounter with Indian forces in southern Pulwama district on Sunday . Addressing a mammoth gathering of people, Naikoo said as part of a ploy to defame the freedom struggle of Kashmiris certain elements were trying to link it to groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Naikoo’s statement comes days after Zakir Musa, a breakaway rebel denounced by the Hizb for expressing support for Al-Qaeda and ISIS, was named as the head of Al-Qaeda’s Kashmir wing according to media reports.
