1966 - Abubakar Tafawa Balewa New African Prime Minister Under a new constitution set up with the cooperation of the British Government, Northern Nigeria has just elected its first Prime Minister, Ahmadu Sardauna of Sokoto. The rank of Sardauna is a historical one, held only by a son of the Royal House of Sokoto. The 45-year-old Prime Minister is the descendant of a long line of hereditary rulers.
