  • July 23, 2018 - Amsterdam, Netherlands - Hundreds of scientists and activists walk this Monday, July 23rd in Amsterdam during the AIDS March to demand access to HIV treatments. Access to healthcare and HIV treatment medication is still an ongoing issue affecting people everywhere, especially LGB, trans and intersex people, sex workers, indigenous people, young women, people who use drugs and many more vulnerable populations worldwide. Four activists from Australia, South Africa, and the UK embarked on an HIV awareness walk from Brussels Grand Place Sunday morning. They will spend 9 days walking to Amsterdam, which is 225 km away. The World AIDS Day falls on Dec. 1, with the theme of ''Getting to Zero'' this year. UNAIDS is striving to achieve the vision of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths. But activists say this might be a difficult target to accomplish, as discrimination is still widespread in many parts of the world. NGOs and volunteers play a significant role in the AIDS prevention field worldwide. They make their efforts in different way to help the people suffering the disease, to take care of the children who are orphaned by AIDS, to broadcast the knowledge about AIDS prevention and the faith to eliminate discrimination. Measuring 6.5 meters wide by 4 meters high, the formidable piece was created by over 120 women and men from the Eastern Cape of South Africa - one of the areas of Africa hardest hit by HIV/AIDS - and is athree part, beaded, quilted, and photographic homage to the loved ones they have lost to the disease. ''The Keiskamma Altarpiece acknowledges the profoundly painful impact of the AIDS epidemic on the community while celebrating the response of its members, especially the women, in caring for those inneed,'' says Dr. Carol Hofmeyr, director of the Keiskamma Trust. Dr. Hofmeyr was there along with one of the grandmothers featured in the piece, Eunice Mangwane - who is looking after a grandson with AIDS. Pictured: Eunice Mangwane sings for the congregation.
