One of the hospital’s neonatologists and paediatricians, Dr Lizelle van Wyk, says doctors wear them when performing highly contagious airway procedures on patients. Dr Van Wyk who is an avid diver, says a colleague showed the mask to her after hospitals in Europe started using them. In the modified hospital version, the snorkel is removed and an adapter and breathing filter has been added.
